Overflow Comb?

Looking to build a tank similar to a Red Sea Reefer 170. Was thinking about having a center Beananimal overflow. My question is: could I run the top of the overflow without a comb and instead have plastic brackets (link below) holding a piece of glass over the top? Seems like the 1/4" gap would allow enough water through and still prevent my seahorses and snails from going over the edge.

Or you could just add 1/4 square plastic grid (egg crate) which can also be over the entire top as well.

Yeah, thought of that. Not a bad option, I know a lot of people use egg crate in place of a comb.

I think a lid might be more aesthetically pleasing, reduce the noise, and allow for more surface skimming.

Just wondering how large of a gap I would need to not have it go underwater, bubble, and gurgle.
