ok i got a cpr cs50 overflow for my 60gal tank.teh flow rate is 300gph .i just attached a piece of tubing and it flow directly into the sump which is a 20g old aquarium. from there ive got a mag-drive 7 which dose 700 gph ive tried running it a few time and the aquarium overflows. im assuming that the pump is to strong. is there anyway i can modify the pump or should i get a new pump taht dose 300gph. or did i forget to attach somthing ?

You can get a control valve which would regulate the flow rate. I have one on mine since my of box is 600 gph and the pump is 900 gph. It works well. Your lfs may have them.

You got it right.
You really have 3 options:
1. Put a ball valve on the return side of the pump so you can slow the pump down. (If it overflowing really fast this is a bad idea as you will be slowing the pump down so much, if its a little its ok.
2. Get a sammler pump (Maybe a Mag 5)
3. Get a bigger overflow.
Are you doing a reef? If so 300 over a 60 isnt enough. Recommend is 10-20x turnover for a reef so you should be look for a 600 range. (Note this is tottal turnover and you can add your powerheads into this number)
