Overflow Question

I will indeed get the pvc cutter tool tang. Any idea of wat size pvc? I was thinking 1" would be fine?!?!?!?!
I looked on ur build thread scott and only saw the actual sump completed...and in the build process. Did u ever get the fuge in their somehow?
Hey Bob u have to suk the air out of the tube to get the suction going...why dont u recommend putting that lil check air valve thing in the top? Im guessing that lil device lets the air out but not in! Ive watched utube on this bout 12 diff ones lol but it still seems so hard.
You guys are correct ill just have to play around with it and pre-test it to find out wat works for me... i saw some people drilling holes in the top of the down U and placing airline in it? Have u ever tried that?

Those air check valves are unreliable, they will leak air. I tried them and had to take them off because they would allow air to get into the overflow and slow down the flow. That's why I said be careful about some the designs you see on those things. If you pick up an aqua lifter pump you won't have to suck on the tubes to prime the overflow. You really don't want a mouthful of tank water...you'll just have to trust me on that one.
You have to install the air lines because that's how you will prime the overflow. You need some way to pull the air out. I think Beaslbob said he connects his to the powerheads in his tank which works as well.
Edit: I just seen Scotts post. If you use acrylic baffles in your 20g sump make sure you cut them about a 1/4" short across the width of the tank. Acrylic expands about 8 times more than glass so if they fit too tight in the tank they could expand and crack the tank. Yes it does and has happened. And he's right, glass is alot cheaper to get cut.

hmmm k ill get a lifter pump, theyre only like $15 max. Prob is i cant find a glass shop or a water place so i can get more jugs... Will a auto glass place have glass to cut? IDK grrrr

Lowes cuts glass. Or look in the phone book for glass shops. Possibly hardware stores. I doubt an auto glass will have any but you could always call and ask. Id look for 3/16 - 1/4". For a 20g.

The Lowes by me said they don't anymore, and the hardware stores sell the window pane stuff which is too thin....Any glass place, they only do glass..will be able to help you.

Here is the Sketch that Corey (2Quills) Did for me for the 20g Long Sump I am sure he wont mind that I share it with you. If you can not find a glass place where you are let me know because I have 2 local ones here that I can get the glass cut to fit your sump if you are going to go with the 20G long tank and if you would like I can do that for you then send it to you, and you can send me the money after I ship it to you. If you want to do something like that just shoot me a PM and I would be more than willing to do that. This is the Sump that I will be using on my 75 gal tank.

Yep I like the typical F design by Mark. The second baffle on the fuge side is optional and not necessary. Some of the Lowes have stopped cutting glass, it just depends, but most of them still do. Although finding 1/4" there is another story, usually they have to order it so you may want to call before you make a trip. A glass shop really is the best place to go if you can find one. You could still use the acrylic, there's nothing wrong with that. 1/4" should be fine for a 20g sump. If you do use the acrylic just remember to cut it a little short so it doesn't sit tight against the glass and crack your tank when it expands. And don't skimp on the silicone.

hmm so the return would be in the middle...how does the bubble trap work? Is it eggcrate? Why isnt the fuge in the middle and the return on the far side?

The design is intended for the drain line to be split with most of the drain water going to the skimmer side and about a 1/4 of the drain water going to the fuge side. The idea is to have less flow going to the fuge so that it has longer contact time with the bacteria in the sand bed if you chose to run one for denitrification purposes..

The bubble trap(tower) is made out of acrylic or glass whichever you choose.....I would opt personally for acrylic. The bubble trap(tower) has teeth routed in the bottom. Thick of it as an overflow box in a tank, but it will be inverted with the teeth at the bottom......

LOL..There is a thread called Flowers sump/fuge build...my first sump.
 
Tangs rule made it sound like you need to be a math major to do a sump. I would be intimidated.
 
My sump is filled half way. Actually 1 inch below the baffle in the center. When the pumps are stopped..... the water back siphons to the little hole I made in the return hose at the top in the display tank. As soon (to the second) the air is sucked into that hole the water stops back siphoning, at that point my sump has filled to about 1/3 full with about 6 inches to spare.  No more water goes in because the whole system has stopped. When I turn the pumps back on...the return pump sends water from the sump and it begins to fill the display tank...as soon as the level of water matches the overflow in the top tank, the extra water goes in there back to the sump and the system is restored just as it was before the power went off.
 
Now everytime the power is off I know it won't go any higher in the sump then that 6 inches from the top every time without fail. Please believe me...LOL...If I say it's easy...it's easy.

Honestly i havent even looked... I did look at PVC piping when i was grabing some buckets and more water jugs at home depot today and found the cutter thing tang was talking about! I think ill go with 1 1/4" piping. I still have to move out of moms LOL before i set this up so no rush on my part. I do wanna have all my apples lined up though to set it up! That way when i do, ill be totally ready kinda like u and ur 75.... if only the gf would stop bit****** about $. I think shes ready to move out more than I! I just have to look in the phone book. Ive been so busy. Someone stole my debit card and used about $300 so ive been busy tryin to get everything taked care of in me life. I think i know who it was and it hurts that someone would do such a thing!

Yeah, I totally understand, and that is why I have waited so long, and bought a little here and a little there. Its good to have everything you need when you are setting up. Like I said before, if you can not find a place there that is reasonable for glass if that is what you want to go with, just let me know, I cant get all of it here for a 20G long for 25.00, thats all I paid for mine.
That stinks that your card got stolen and used. If it was a friend, I would say they are not much of a friend if they are going to do something like that to you, because if they do it once, they sure will do it again!!!!!

Yeah, I know all about that, with friends that I used to hang with, and trust me I have done my share of the drink and smoke to in my life. Been a long time since I have done either. With the "beaslbob trap" I use powerheads or even the return pump to suck the air out.
