Ok I have had a reef tank for over 2 yrs now but my dam overflow is way to loud, i used to put some poly pad in the overflow to shut it up (which it did until the poly pad got dirty and thus start makin noise again) but is there really any way to quiet it down...I have my overflow with U tube plumbed with PVC into my sump.... :help:
Anyone have a real solution? what about those auto syphon overflows any good?

I read auto syphons are quieter...I decided to go with a built in overflow box instead.

my tank isnt reef ready so it doesnt have the built in overflow column...but am concerned about those auto overflows and power outages or problems syphoning .....but anything is better than the noise i have coming from mine...esp it being in my room omg....

You can search for info on durso or stockman type stand pipes. They are used for quiteing the guggling. Both are easy to make with cheap parts from HomeDepot.

This is what we have and our overflow is almost silent...no gurgling at all. It is just an air tube inserted in the overflow tube to minimize noise. Sorry pic is sideways..

you have an overflow box? ive seen people jsut stick straws in them to quite them down. Is it the overflow itself or it running into the sump? a durso will also work.
and the above pick wont have water comeing out the top because the water is flowing down and creating a vaccum. it is sucking air down with the water so there is not a vaccume which creates the gurgling i believe.

Yeah its the overflow, its also plumbed by PVC into the sump...its a flushing/gurgling sound...where do people put the straw inside the hole of the overflow going down into the sump?
