I have a 65 gal tank with
2 saddle back clowns
1 blue damsel
1 yellow tang
1 cleaner shrimp
1 bicolor dottyback
1 threaded butterfly
I dont know if this is overstocking but all the fish seem VERY healthy and the water is crystal clear.

I think your tank is fine... some people may have an issue with a yellow tang in a 65. I don't share this opinion.

seems fine, the yellow tang when it's at it's max size could be to big but i think it's fine

I was told the yellow tang may be to big but he is actually pretty small. Once he gets bigger ill see if i should remove him.

Ok ok.... Here it comes.....
The only problem with your fish list is the yellow tang..... They need plenty of swimming room.... what are the dementions on your tank??

If the Tang gets too big. Most fish stores will happily take it back and give you another one that is smaller.

If they need so much room to swim why is it that every one I see (usually juvi's) is usually hanging around the rocks? To me it seems a fish that needs a lot of swimming room would normally be out in the open area swimming around. As I have never owned a yellow tang am I safe to assume that as they get older they move away from the rocks and out into the open?

yes, when they are younger, they have the instinct to survive (and also don't have a very big barb at the back of their tail for protection), so they hang around the rock so as to be able to hide should a predator come looking for a meal. However, when they get bigger, they are out in the open much more, because they are more capable of defending themselves.
I agree that the tang may become unhappy, but if he seems fine, you're ok. Just keep a close eye on him, because they're very susceptible to ich, and being in a short tank may stress him out enough to cause an ich outbreak. Just some friendly advice
