"The Conciencious Marine Aquarist" by Bob Fenner. Probably the best all around book on the subject in existence.
I'm in Cumming as well, off GA400 Exit 12. Shoot me an email. If you need any help setting stuff up, advice on local stores, etc I'd be glad to help, I've got a full fabrication shop too and am always willing to help build he who buys materials...

welli set up my first tank in december and before that i was quite intimidated as well. just about any book would be good but i have heard that the Conscientious Marine Aquarist is a great book. it seems all intimidating now, but it is well worth it, believe me. it still requires dedicatoin and what not but i think the initial setup is probably the hardest part. then all it is is feeding, monitoring, and testing. lots of fun. just some rules of thumb: always listen to what the majority of the people on this site say, because they have learned from experience, get a book (but you knew that), read the book, research thuroughly before buying anything (equipment, livestock, chems, ect.) and thats all i can think of, so good luck.
welcome to the boards

there is alot to absorb but dont let it get in the way. This is a fun hobby! I have been out of it for a couple of years and just mixed the water for my 20 gal and it feels great. You will learn as you go as with almost everything in life use this forum as a guide. You cant learn everything before you dive in.

I totall agree..This site is awesome..I have seen personally, people answer questions posted a bazillion times. But they answer anyway. This site is a GREAT resource. But before I found this place i read "The simple guide to Marine Aquariums" bought at your local MEGA book store. I have read that book cover to cover many times and still use it as reference. If you are dedicated, and enjoy doing research,...you will prosper in this hobby. Good luck....and just keep asking!

I second this book: The Conciencious Marine Aquarist.
Also, The New Marine Aquarium is good.
I know how you feel, but reading a book made a big difference for me, so good luck and hang in there!

OGRE,
I was like you... I read a lot on this fantastic site and elsewhere... Just read my post 5 mins ago about corraline algae... It will tell you how this hobby is beautifully addictive.
Don't give up... work for it.

I wanted to chime in to underscore the other comments. I received a saltwater aquarium for Christmas from my wife. I had never even thought of a saltwater aqarium. I was thinking fresh water, but she encouraged me to do saltwater because of the more colorful fish. Well I did everything wrong. My LFS found a sucker big time. Then I found this site. Over the last three months, I have researched and corrected my mistakes. Last weekend I traded out my crushed coral for live sand. I built a refugium. I added a protein skimmer. Now I feel like I know what I am doing. I have learned so much over the last couple of months. My wife has even told me that she regrets getting me the aquarium because of all the time I spent researching it to learn. Ha!

There were several weekends that I told my wife I was going to the office to feed the fish even though they had all died, because I did not have the heart to tell her that I killed the fish. Then I found this site. Over the last three months, I have researched and corrected my mistakes. Last weekend I traded out my crushed coral for live sand. I built a refugium. Nice hook-up. No need to be overwhelmed now. SCSInet is very knowledgeable. Fenner's book is awesome. I understand how you feel I was overwhelmed in the beginning and now I'm anxiously nervous, just want to make sure I do it right.
