i am no scientist but my powerhead came with an option to combine air with water and i thought it would help aerate my tank. After about 10 seconds i realized that water and air don't mix. or at least i don't think they do. does anyone know the answer?

Water and oxygen do indeed mix. Fish breath the oxygen from the water. Saltwater, by itself, has very little oxygen in it because of the density of it. What kind of power head did you buy?

It will aerate the tank, it will also fill the water with bubbles. The bubbles rise to the surface, pop, and spray a tiny amount of saltwater up in the air. This stuff collects on everything close to the tank in the form of salt.
Just make sure your skimmer is working properly and have a 15X - 25X waterflow turnover rate and your tank will have plenty of oxygen.

I run MJ's in my tank. That "attachment" is for fresh water tanks. Use the clear cap to stop the bubbles. An MJ 900 in a thirty gallon is alright.
