Alot of people paint the backs of their tank.....Is the tank up and running or still empty......I painted mine when it was empty and rolled the paint.....If it's empty and you can deal with overspray and such you could spray it and it's quicker......Just make sure your tape the tank off though......PITA to deal with the overspray

I just painted the back of my tank last weekend and it came out great !! better than any paper background i ever had. I also used a roller . about three to four coats usually does the job. just get acrylic paint.

If it's up and running I would roll the paint....will take a little longer, but you'll get nice results with no overspray.....I would also start running carbon before and during your painting process.....

Your tank inhabitants are a little more sensitive than we are and they will pick up the fumes from the paint before we will.....just a precautionary measure.....

Yeah i painted the back of my tank black and it came out awesome and i did a year after it was set up and running with no troubles just do like acrylic said and be careful not to drip any paint in your tank and you'll be fine. Some people go with blue also but i like the black you'll be happy with the results either way you go it looks great.

On existing tanks I recommend measuring, and then going down and buying acrylic panels from a plastics store. I did this to one of my tanks a few years ago and it looked great......plus you get the choice of buying a few different colors and replacing them. They will compression fit or a piece of tape will hold it.

Hey sorry Tarpon didnt mean to take so long to reply but sat. is tank maint. day and i just finished and im having issues ah yes never a dull moment B.T.W. never ever put that red slime away crap in your tank it sent my pH in a nose dive. Anyway to answer your question i used a glossy black latex acrylic and rolled it wish i would have done it before i set up the system it was kind of a pain but worth it in my opinion it looks great. But to dicide what color i wanted it i bought one of those two sided backgrounds one side blue ,one side black and put up the blue side for a couple days and then the black side to get an idea of what i liked.
