Does anything happen to the water quality when he does that? I have never had a puffer, just curious. Awesome fish, sure is big!!!

Puffers puffing up isn't good for the puffer, but sometimes it just happens. As long as it isn't provoked, then it's a natural instinct to them. We had a dogface puffer that puffed somewhat regularly. We only noticed when he was trying to deflate, so we never found out what made him puff up.

Not to start a long debate or anything, but I am almost positive that puffers puffing in water is actually not harmful to them. It is used as a natural defense mechanism. It definitely becomes bad for them when they puff out of water, because then they suck in air and they get an air bubble in their swim bladder. This can be deadly for a puffer sometimes.
Judging from the first pic, he may have been protecting himself against the lion.
I would love to see more pics of your panda puffer when he not puffed. He looks very nice.

My porcupine normal and puffed, more like he's stretching. He does it early in the morning, when nobody is next to him. So he isn't being provoked, I have seen the whole episode plenty of times from start to finish, IT IS AWESOME!!!
Here are a few pics.

cool. I saw my spotted hawaiian puffer puff up once but was not able to get to the camera fast enough...I didn't see anything provoke him either. sadly the little guy jumped a couple months later and committed suicide?

yeah when they puff up they look funny but, I had one who puffed up and took in air when he did and then he died on me. I was heartbroken I hand fed him and everything I cried my eyes out I tried to elp him but couldn't. I put him in a box and buried him outside. The pet store near my house said it wasn't good when they did that because he could get ick.
