The food floats ontop, and my fish likes hanging out at the bottom... Im worried that he isnt eating, as im just having to take the food out, so it doesnt just sit.... any ideas?????
the guy at the SWFish store told me to use that type of food.... ough.... its allways something, huh

You can try small pieces of chopped shrimp or scallop. Frozen plankton, thawed cubes of Marine cuisine, and other frozen foods.
Feeding issues aside, how big is this fish now? What will you do in a few months when it outgrows your tank? A 55 is no where near big enough to house one of these fish for any length of time. Unless you have a major upgrade planned soon, I'd re-think this particilaur fish.

I have a friend with a 200+gal tank.... they will just pay me what i payed for the fish (and they get a bigger fish, for the low price, so it all works....)
i feel my clown in the same tank brine shrimp (frozen), but the grouper doesnt seem to eat it much.......
Is brine meaty enough for this fish?????

no it isn't, buy silversides, and thaw them in warm water, then when you put them in the water they will sink slowly, and how big is this panther?, my friend got one at about an inch, and 2 months later its 3.

you haven't been putting them in warm water???, i'm guessing "lance fish" are just saltwater feeder fish of some sort.. well if i am correct about that, then yes, put them in warm water for a couple minutes, not only will they sink to him, but when an animal eats frozen food they eat it, then it thaws in their stomache which can injure them.

At work, we have a 225 gallon tank in our waiting room/lobby and we have a panther grouper. Such a funny, picky eater. He will ONLY eat krill and it MUST be the pieces that look like a whole krill... with the eyes still on it. The other pieces, he totally ignores and waits for the "whole" pieces with the eyes still on them. He actually stalks it and pounces on it. We think that he likes those pieces because it makes him actually feel like he's "hunted" something.

We soak our food in zooplex and all the fish seem to LOVE it!
Good luck with your panther grouper! Ours is getting big! Soon, we'll have to move the little booger!

Frozen brine is an inadequate diet for any marine fish. Get a feeding stick and purchase some fresh seafood from the grocer.{shrimp, scallop, mussell, clam, etc.} A drop of garlic Xtreme on the food may entice him to eat & boosts the immune system. Or you can soak the food in a little tank water, with fresh sliced garlic.{remove garlic before feeding} Put the food on the stick right in front of the grouper. Be insistent, but patient. Never met a grouper that would'nt eat. The silversides you are using{lance fish} is also ok, but they really foul the water. Adding some Selcon and Kent Zoe on a rotating basis to the food will give the fish added vitamins & amino acids.
Hope you have a great protein skimmer, are doing regular water changes, and watch levels of phosphate & nitrate.

he may just have a digestive problem if you have feed pellet or flake. just dont feed it for a couple of days and then it should be ok. thats what happened to mine.

no panther here, but we have a leaflip and are almost the same since in the same family, but have had panther for 4 yrs in the past.
I just read a really great recipe from BETH in the FAQ section of this section I think, if not in the new hobbyist section on making your own blend of food. I am going to try it tonight. GO READ IT, but in a nutshell, she suggests getting a food processor and adding all sorts of seafood that fishes like adding some minced garlic, viamins, veggies etc.. spredding the processed mix on a pan and freezing. Then seperate into small containers and cutting off a chunk to feed the tank.
NOW, ime we feed our grouper off of the feeder stick just as we do our lion. I was at first taking a little tank water in a coffee cup and adding the frozen krill, but seems that almost immeadiately they get thawed and almost too mush to stick on the feeder stick. So, now.. I take out the krill add two to three drops (drip drops) of ro water and a small piece of minced garlic and while they are still mostly frozen stick them on the stick (one at a time) feed my lion first then go to the bottom of the tank with the stick where I will find the grouper. I do not remove the garlic, as they and the other fish in the tank LOVE it. But don't go crazy with the ammount.
BETH suggests just adding it to your homemade mix and freezing. So like I said, I am getting ready to try that.
FOR THE PERSON WHO SAID.. "my grouper hasn't eaten in days", IMO again, just be really careful. I had an angel who did this for 3 days I guess and she was DOA when I got home from work last night. My fiance left only an hour or so before I got home. IF you have a qt tank I suggest you take that grouper out and try monitoring him and babysitting him closely. Again, not suggesting that you have a problem, but I/we are just a little skittish in this area right now.
peace n love yall- Rachid and Tonia

This will kill your saltwater fish in time. Freshwater feeders destroy the liver.
