Panther grouper

Like 250 gallons, they need lots of swim room and can get up to 27 inches in nature, but in captivity only average about 20. Like I stated before, they are very active fish and need quite a bit of swim room. Cool fish though

Remember that as panther groupers mature they lose that nice spotted appearance The Panther grouper grows fast and you should not get it unless you have the ability to house an adult fish. The species is very hardy but can despite that due to its size not be recommended to most beginners, since big aquariums tend to be unusual among beginners.
The Panther grouper is a highly predatory fish and will eat anything that it can fit into its mouth. Never keep it with small fish like damsels or clowns as they will end up as food sooner or later. This species is not reef safe as it eats invertebrates, but it can be kept with corals and anemones. If they can't eat it they will leave it alone; the Panther grouper is relatively mild tempered and ignores just about anything that it can't eat. It is much less aggressive than most other grouper species. They can be kept with most fish species that are large enough not to be eaten. And to answer you original question 300 g tank min as these fish have a reputatin of a long life span in captivitey

Panther groupers, IMO, are one of the biggest scams in this hobby...along with sweetlips.
They are sold as tiny, adorable little fish.
IF they survive, they grow to be huge, and much less attractive fish.
DO NOT buy a panther grouper unless you will have a 200g minimum tank. Do not assume an LFS will take it back when it is too big.

Yeah I saw a poor panther at the LFS mustve been at least 12" in a 30g tank waiting to be resold -- looked faded but that's cuz they aren't so cute anymore.

Love the fish, but yeah, they get too big, eat all your smaller fish, and later down the road fade from pearly white to dull brown. But, theyre incredibly fun to keep if you can meet the requirements.

I dont think they get dull as the get older, some stay fairly white and keep their spots. Personally, i really like it just because it is such a different shape for a fish, there is nothing out there shaped like that that swims the way it does.
