It never ceases to amaze me at how the most innocuous, unspectacular moments can be so meaningful.
Tonight we had a quiet, family night. Wife brought some pizza home, we gave the girls a bath and then put the baby (Sadie, 1.5 yrs) to bed at her bedtime, around 8:30. Brooklyn, 3, and the wife and I settled in to watch a movie.
Well Sadie decided that she wasn't going to bed. She was in a great mood all day but was screaming and crying in her crib. Eventually we relented and just brought her downstairs to hang out and, hopefully, fall asleep. Didn't quite work out the way we planned...
From the moment she was brought down, this little monkey was running all around, screaming and giggling, just trying to have some fun. She would run up to me and scream and then get hysterical when I'd pull the blanket over my head. Then she'd run to my wife and bounce up and down screaming and giggling when my wife acted scared. She put my baseball cap on backwards and danced to the music on TV. She tried to eat the ottoman and basically flipped out. Then Brooklyn wanted to join in the fun so whatever Sadie would do, she would do just a bit louder, faster or wilder. My wife and I had a laugh attack just watching them.
The moral of the story is just that it seems to be the simplest things that mean the most with the kids. When my daughter comes up to me and gives me a hug and says, "Daddy, I missed you when you were at work."... I melt. It's those basic moments of cuddling, playing, laughing that comprise the greatest moments that I've had thus far in my life.
Just something that was on my mind tonight...
