also i dont do water changes as often as i should and with a moded filter and a skimmer it should make up for that

I would say what I mentioned would be much more effective in your situation than a skimmer.
It's not like your 10gallon is packed with fish so overfeeding and excessive wasted generated by livestock are not an issue so there is no need for a skimmer. What I mentioned would keep the water clean and absorb/export testable PO4 and NO3

ummm, I read through the 1000+ replies and couldn't believe some of the things I have read:
the incident with the Shy guy, both of you, really???
then you lose a fish and tell everyone not to ask why?? yet preach to people about a cycle?? DAMSELS=CLOWNFISHS, really???
you stated your mistakes have given you the mucho experience you have??
the whole dorm room moving the tank leaving lights on/off lalalalla.
Then you call a businessman a retard for stating you should have a skimmer, then come running on here to ask everyone if that is right????? And now you are trying to buy a skimmer because you have some SNAILS in your tank.

Clownfish are a type of damsel. That's a known fact.
You don't need a skimmer to be successful.
Patrick's clown fish had got the tail cut off in a power filter which was a large determiner for death.
Shylock or whatever his name is was unwilling to accept any input at all regardless of who was giving it.
BTW Jess, where's your tank? nonexistent?
