PBLRDom's 12G Nano

Hey guys/gals! I have been out of the Saltwater arena for a few years now, but am ready to jump back in. I have some questions (I don't remember all the specifics on this stuff and have never done nano) that I hope you can answer for me, or guide me on the right path. I just bought a JBJ 12G Nano Deluxe and should have it within a few days.
This being my first attempt at a nano I do have some newbie questions.
I searched around for different brands/models before I made my purchase and decided to go with the JBJ. It seems that many people have them and have been very successful with them, so I decided to jump in.
My first question is in the 12G how much LR and LS should I use? I have purchased from SWF before and like their service, so ill buy this stuff from the packages they offer...
10lb LS?
12lb LR?
Secondly I am going to be using RO water in this tank, but is there any great new and improved water conditioners?
Im really excited and will post up asap when it gets here and I get it all setup.

hello and welcome back to the hobby!
I have a 12 gal. and I got about 10lbs of LR. I figured when I purchased coral, they might be on LR, thus adding more in time. I got a mushroom rock and that was about it, everything else came on shells or plugs etc. Oh well.

I'm not sure what you mean by conditioners, but all I add to my water is the salt. And definately RO water

I'm not sure I have helped, but again welcome and post pictures as you go!

are you goin to do any mods to it? Check out my Blog for a Fuge upgrade in the rear chambers
I was actually thinking of something very similar and you seem to have it dead on. I just might go with it, but I have a few questions...
1. Does your chaeto grow like crazy? I ask because I don't have a LFS and I need to buy some from someone....
2. In the pic you have posted in your blog I see you have a PH on the right side of the tank. I have not ventured into the nano sector before is this necessary for proper flow? If so what brand and model are you recommending?
3. The return pump in chamber 3, Ive hear its no good.... Any thoughts or recommendations to replace?
thanks in advance!

Glad that you decided to get back into the hobby. I just bought a 24g Nano so if you have any questions about your tanks behavior in the next few weeks let me know because I'm basically two weeks ahead of you. Newbs idea for modifying the back chambers are good and I would recommend that for sure. Its simple and inexpensive. The stock return pump is pretty weak so I would either replace it or get another ph or both. Online you can get the koralia 1's for less than 30 depending on how much flow you want in your tank. Some say the koralia nano is enough, some say not enough. Good luck with everything!

Thank you very much, I will definitely let you know if I have any questions. As far as the stock return if $$ is not an option do you recommend any pump in particular. I by no means am a rich man, but if I have to shell out some cash on a good pump that will last I will. After doing research all morning I am going to add a PH, any suggestions there as well? Ill look into the Koralia 1, keeping in mind this is only a 12G tank.

Forgot to mention.... One that will fit in the tiny 3rd chamber.

Some people replace the pumps with Maxi pumps. I think in a 12g a maxi 900 would work, and for a PH i would go with the K1, thats what im rockin in my 12g

Agreeing with Newb on that one. If I replace my return pump I'll let you know what I go with. Yea the small chambers make it a tight squeeze, definitely easier to swap stuff before you got water in there. Keep us posted on everything.

Got some good advice from one of the best. He said to get a Rio 6hf because it uses less wattage thus less heat than the mj1200 and has a higher flow rate. In theory about 30 bucks. I'll probably do mine next week like thursdayish, I'll let you know how it goes. It supposed to fit with your existing tube too.

I really want to keep the mfg look with the hood.... That being said the DIY kit is 1.5X the cost of the tank!
