Quite the list. Glad to hear its going to be SPS-dominated.
When you really think about it, T5s arent that much cooler than MHs. They have more area to spread the heat around, as opposed to the MHs just transferring it all into a heat sink and into the room.
Doesnt make any difference here, but I figure a 6 bulb fixture would heat it up a lot as well, but it would be tough to compare to like a 400 watt MH.

They are a lot cooler than mh and PC's I have a 4 bulb fixture over my cube tank. My temperature never fluctuates like it did with the PC's. And at any given time I can touch the bulbs without getting burned, unlike my PC's.

paintballer is right. i saw that thread somewhere. t5 is the same as mh in terms as the heat they release. if you have 250watts of t5 and 250w of mh its going to release the same heat. t5 spreads the heat over a certain length, while mh keeps it one spot. whether mh puts heat directly into the tank or not is something else

ahhh ok.. I misunderstood the statment...I cant comment on that but I can say with certainty that T5's have no affect on my tanks temp. Although as stated the heat is dispursed throught the entire length of the fixture.

Yea, but I think what the final verdict (T5 vs MH) is just personal preference. With the smaller MH fixtures, like my 20" Sunpod, it was cheaper than to get the T5 equivalent. Peef's already got a chiller from his 24 tank, so I would try to beef that tank up on MHs. Again, just personal preference I guess.
And the PCs were also really hot like you said PerfectDark. My tank actually ran hotter with the PCs and stock hood on than it does now.

See from everything that I have heard I wouldn't need a chiller with a T5 setup. I am hoping to not have to buy one. The chiller that I have on my 24 wouldn't even come close to being effective enough to use on the 55g. It would just run constantly and wear it down. Within a few days I am taking the tank in to be drilled at a glass store here I am just waiting to hear back from Dennis210 about hole sizes and such. After that it is on to the lighting. I am also fixing up the stand...like restaining and sanding. I think I am also going to add in a couple of support braces inside just to be extra safe.

No I can attest to that you wont need a chiller with t5's no one does.. in fact I will take a pic if you want of my cube tank I have 4 HO t-5 nova's on there they are all 4 10k daylights and they are not raised off the tank. They sit litterally 1" from the water. I also have 2 CF 18" Actinics and my tank stays steady from morning to night @ 79* It flucuated more with the stock hood and PC's now my temp doesnt move. The heat is dispursed as stated above not only through out the entire bulb but split between 4 bulbs as opposed to being concentrated on a 4"MH bulb that is giving off the equivelent which makes the heat much more concentrated. Thus, creating the need for a chiller in most canopy type set ups.
he he he I said "thus" I sounded G^Y just then... LOL.
The Nova Sundials I got for my 36gal bow I used on my cube tank instead... I like them sooo much I decided to keep them on there. My only regret is I got the 30" set I would of prefered the 24" if I was going to put them on the cube tank. I am trying to find a trade with some one 30" for 24". Any way I am going with a 6 bulb fixture nova extreme pro on the bow tank which Is IMO what I would recomend peef looking at. The entire fixture @ 36" with bulbs is only 289.00 much cheaper than 250 watt MH set up would cost me. And for peefs the 48" set is $342.00 the only thing I would change is I would run 2 actinics and 4 10k daylights instead of 3 and 3. But he would have 324 watts of HO T5 lights on that 55gal. But thats just my 2 cents.

Both are T5 novas
1st Nova extreme

2nd nova extreme pro
48" 324 watts 6-54 watt......$343.99

Yea, regardless a chiller shouldnt be necessary because of the way that the T5s handle the heat. I would go with the 8-54 watt, but I think that both would hold SPS just fine. 8-54 watt would be really good, like really really good
.

I know, I am stoked. I am just going to refurb the stand/canopy and have the tank drilled and overflow put in. Then its light time! yee haw.

no your better off with the nova extreme pro it has individual reflectors which if your into SPS is a must have when trying to keep SPS using T5s plus 6 t5s is plenty over a 55gal long an 8 lamp fixture will have to much light overhanging your tank which is really unusable or wasted there are other fixtures that are better but come with alot bigger price tag

look into ATI light fixture or aquatinics constelation if you have the extra buck

+1
Individual reflectors will benfit your tank more than 2 extra bulbs.

HOLEEEYYY Animal Kingdom Batman.... Sheesh. That beats my 2 SW tanks, 2 dogs and 1 Guinea Pig (which I could do with out).
But I have a daughter so maybe that makes up for some....

My daughter LOVES snakes.... I have no idea why... I mean I really like them and I had a 6'+ Red Tail Boa back in the day wayyy before her but for some reason she loves them. This weekend the Pet Expo was in town and she tried to kiss a 14' ball python on the mouth.. The guy was like uhhhhh that might not be a good idea.... of course she didnt but it was funny to see his reaction.
