Pepper Spray sucks!!!!!

I am in training to be a cop and today we had to be sprayed with pepper spray. I made the mistake of telling the instructor that I did not get hit with any spray, so he made sure that I got plenty the next time. I could not open my eyes for about 20 min. It was some of the worst pain I have ever had to endure. Some of my classmates said that my whole face turned brown with the spray. Oh and just FYI if you ever get sprayed water makes it a million times worse, I was fine until I went to the hose and washed my face off. Oh and showering just brought back all the pain. I will try and post some pictures if we got any and I will post the video if I can figure out how.

THAT SUCKS! Have you been tazzered yet?
I guess I can understand why they do that to student cops, I think they want to make sure you know what it feels like before you use it on someone else. I'm suprised that the water only makes it worse, when you see them using it on Cops,(on tv) they always wash the eyes out when they spray someone.
Take care, and next time I think I would keep my mouth shut...Lisa

Lisa,
My agency only has a few tazzers and it is not required for you to be tazzed to carry, but I will be because of the liabilty. There is 1% of the population that is "immuned" to tazzing and if you are that 1% then you have no justification to use your duty weapon (gun) if someone steals your tazzer from you. But on the other hand if you know that you are totally incapacitated by the tazzer and someone steals it then you are justified in using deadly force in defense of your life.
Also the main reason we are sprayed is because nine times out of ten when someone sprays a bad guy in the heat of the moment, guess who gets a bunch of it........The guy trying to restrain him so you must know what it feels like and be able to make an effective arrest while in lots of pain. Oh and I really did not get any spray at all the first time and I was not about to be called the wimp in the class, believe me people did avoid it and they got razzed big time.

Oooo. That was lots of fun, I'll bet. I would be interested in seeing those pics...never saw anyone in the throws of pepper spray before!
If you can't use water, what can you use to make it feel better?!

Oh man, can I relate. I was in law enforcement from 1984 to 1993. We started out with the CN chemical agents and then CS which was a little better. I had actually been in so much CN and CS that it really did not bother me much anymore. Then came the pepper spray CAPSICUM (sp.). When we first certified with pepper spray, we thought that it would be no big deal. Man were we wrong!
When you get hit with pepper spray, you clamp your eyes so tight, it is almost impossible to open them and it almost makes you panic because you feel like you can't breath. As SaltyJ said, you have to know what to expect because you are going to get it also most of the time. One thing I learned for sure. I had to qualify with pepper mace every year and although I learned to handle it better, you never get used to it.
We used tazzers and had a tazzer riot shield that we used during disturbances. I've had quite a few "vampire" marks on me from getting hit with them. I am not one of the people immune to them. One thing that we did learn is that a lot of the people who are immune or have a high tolerance for tazzers are people who have welded for many years. It appears that welders build up a tolerance for current.

Weldersand people on massive amounts of drugs. One guy near hear got tazzed nine times before giving up. That's why they call it DOPE folks.

Not sure what MA. requirements are here in FL I had 672hrs of school. But FL is pretty strict, we don't accept any other state certification. So MA might be less hrs. I went on a ride along last night with my departments traffic enforcement unit. you have not lived until you ride 110 in a police car down the busiest street in Kissimmee weaving in and out of traffic.

I had to be exposed to tear gas in Navy boot camp. That was no fun either. Couldn't see, couldn't breathe, and you produce about a gallon of mucous in 5 minutes. Ahhh.....the memories:rolleyes: .

I think they still use CN or CS. It's sucks but capsicum is brutal.

Hey Salty, I work for Pasco ad we are very fortunate to carry both OC and a Taser. We got sprayed so we would know how long it takes for the full effect. But, we still get deputies who spray someone and rush right in to take the person and the full effect hasn't been reached. Needless to say, the fight is on and pepper gets back on the deputy. I did spray a drunk one night and it had no effect on him. I fought him for a couple minutes till backup arrived. He did get medically cleared! I was one of the last people hit with the taser in our agency. That thing is AWESOME. You can't get on the ground fast enough. I felt like a jackhammer went off through my body and someone kicked me in the nuts at the same time.
Keep your head down and stay safe,
rob

when i was in the marines we had this stuff called phase 4 it was as thick as some gillete gel shaving cream and strong enough to take down a grizzly bear and was heat and light sensitve for a couple days after you got hit with it now that was bad you had to dunk your head in a bucket to get it off it was so thick and wrap a towel around your neck to keep it from running down to the you know where area.
