peppermint shrimp

I got some peppermint shrimp a week and a half ago. All they do is sit under the live rock and when I turn the lights out at night they move and sit under a different rock. What is the problem with them, the ones I had before were very active. I guess I just got the lazy ones of the bunch?

Mine always hides. Except when the likes go out then he swims all over the place. My cleaner shrimp are always out and moving around

I had a female carrying eggs (in the refugium) before I went on a 3-day trip. Just got back and she no longer has eggs. Anyone know if I missed the little guys swimming about, or does she put them somewhere and then sometime later they hatch?? Any ideas how long that takes??

They were probably eaten. Both of my cleaners have eggs. I have been watching. They are real green and been like that all week.

I've had two for 3-4 months now, when I first got them they were shy & hide in the rocks. They still do but they come out freely even when the lights are on now. Give them some time to get use to their new home.

i think peppers will most likely hide unless there is food floating around, mine will come out only at night, or unless there is food....and maybe once in a blue moon he peeks out to see whats going on.

thats what peppermint shrimp do, hang underneath overhangs until night when they become active. Thats what most shrimp do unless they are accustomed to being fed frequently during the day or are extremely comfortable (read no fear of preditory threat).

Mine come out during feeding and at night. Mine also prefer to stand right side up. My cleaners on the other hand were going everyhwere until my halides were installed. Now they only come out during feeding and at night and they are almost always upside down.

Mine took care of all the time. It gave them something to take care of. When I brought my LTA home they thought it was lunch time but, they were pulled out and now my aiptasia is back. Been thinking about getting another one.....

Mine found a nice hole on the bottom/back of a big live rock chunk and he is ALWAYS in his little hole. Usually you can just see the top of his head, but I've seen him at night swimming around like crazy. I'm glad mine isn't the only one!
Barebucta: I was up late one night with the lunars on and I noticed my peppermint finishing up the last few bites of an aiptasia that was at almost twice as big as he was. It happened super fast, but I was glad I caught him in the act. The whole reason I got him in the first place was to eat that one anemone!

a real problem recently is that people are getting the california variety of peppermint shrimp Lysmata californica which don't touch aiptasia... the Lysmata wurdenmanni peppermint will.... the non-aip's are from California and the Atlantic

I moved one of my peppermints from my 100 into my 30, as that was where I had an aptaisa and the morning after I put him in, the lil buggar was gone!

yea I have a huge aptista problem and bought 3 of these guys the other day. I'm never quick enough to catch the aptista and squirt joe's juice inside, so I'm hoping that they do the trick. Still waiting though...patience i guess.
