I do it myself. I got two long haired chihuahuas that I occasionally take the snippers to. I do worry about my dogs though when I'm not home. Those little B... I mean guys will get into anything and tear it up. ugh!
Atticus is to mean for a groomer. My mom had a Golden Retriever I took to the groomers for her. I just called to know if he was ready yet, and how he did while I was on the phone. It was just an hour.
To call just to ask seems over protective. They are busy and the faster they get the dogs done the more money they make, I would think calling would slow them down.
Luckily my dog has short hair and doesnt need grooming, but I do bring him to the vet to get his nails cut. I made him bleed once and since then I bring him in. Vet's office only charges me $6 so for me its well worth it.
My parents have had Standard Poodles for years. They spend about $60 A MONTH on grooming for their current one.

Crate training is a blessing. It is not cruelty. A dog that gets into stuff and tears it up, could also get into something that can kill or injure it. I would reconsider letting the little B.... guys run amuck without supervision..

Everything that they could get hurt with is locked up or high enough that they can not get into. i.e. cleaners, chemicals, guns, rat poisen, etc...
I too keep the Rat posion up away from where the rat dogs can get into it .
