PH question

What causes PH to be high?
My parameters are as follows:
Nitrates (0) ppm
Nitrites (0) ppm
Ammonia (0)ppm
PH looks between 8.4 and 8.8
Could it be a bad tester kit?
I did a water change of 25% last Wednesday night.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't think overbuffering would do it. That retards the drop in ph, but usually only raises ph to a point. I'd be surprised if it would take it that high.
I suspect a faulty test. 8.8 is the high range on many tests, and it wouldn't be shocking if your test is goofed up and reading essentially off the chart.
