Phosban

I just got my reactor today and I added 3 tbs approx 45 grams, I have it running now but the media seems to be just moving around the bottom of the reactor. Is that normal or should I add more? It's a 75 gallon dt

Yup, you just want it barely tumbling so it doesn't clump together. The slower the flow through the chamber the longer time the media has to pull phosphates out of the water. If it's churning all around then the media is going to get all ground up and turn into small fines.

I have a 40gal tank with a 29gal sump/refugium and I use the whole 150g jar of phosban in the reactor. This lasts me months. Every couple days I open the valve and increase flow for a second to move the phosban around, otherwise I keep the flow only strong enough to lightly move the phosban around that is on the top in the reactor. I test for phosphates periodically, if I see any, I change out the media.

- I use about 1/2 pound in mine. Depending on your problem and size of tank, 3 tbs might not do much for you. Did you add it because you have a problem? A big problem?
You cant add a lot at once. Your tank has gotten use to what it has and suddenly removing it will kill your tank. Depending on tank size, I would start with some, then more over a few weeks.
WHay size is your tank and what are your readings?
Edit: Sorry just saw the size. OK, if your readings are high, I would start with about 1/4 cup, for a week or so, and test. If still high and has not dropped, go to 1/2 cup for a week or so, and test.... and so on. When you START to see it come down, you have reached the right amount.
Throw away the old and replace with the correct amount of the new. The new should last several months and all verified by testing.

I don't really have a problem I just want to keep the phosphates down cuz Im using tap. Waiting for cash for ro/di. I have a wetdry and I was using a pad, but I heard reactors were the best way to go. I only put 3 tbs in cuz the container said 50g per 100 gallons, so I didn't wanna overdose.
Temp 77.5- 80
Ca 450
Alk 9
Ammonia o
Ph 8.0
Spec 1.024
(2) 250w 15000k mh 2 t5 actinics (soon to be uvl super actinics)
2 korellia 3's, 1 korellia 2

That makes sense. like I said you don't want to drop them too fast. however depending on how bad your water is, the above still applies. 50g may work, or it may not and you might see a sharp rise in your phosphates every time you do a water change. you really don't want it going quickly up and down either.
Once you have reached zero, it doesn't really matter how much you use because you wont have any.

how will when I know to change the media out? When I start getting detectable readings I guess?

I just want to make sure it's set up right too. The first sponge and disk go at the bottom of the reactor, then the media and I put the top disc and sponge about 1in from the top is that right?

as long as the sponge is above the media it doesn't matter where. put the sponge under the top disk to keep it flat and keep media from slipping past.
