Was at the LFS today, and the owner was telling me about some thing to hang onto the tank to remove Phosphates. I have had my set up for 6 months now and have several small zoos, just added candy canes and star polyps. I have two false perp and one small regal tang. I plan on have two PJ cards and a Flame angel. Is a Phosphate Remover nessary or will my tank do fine with out it. I have a 8 Gal refugium and 90 lbs live rock for 55 gal tank?

Few hermits, bought hares before but both died within a few days of putting them into tanks, (water tested good nitrates 40 ppm) other than that I have one cleaner shrimp, had asters (30) all died off too. Now currenly with baby snails and 4 "snails" brought back from Gulf of Mexico, they feed on meaty foods and stay under sand mostly.

well, snails take poorly to salinity levels. not so sure that the nitrates would hurt them. I would test your salinity, and if its good ...add a few turbos, or marg. snails. I have a few and also margarita snails. Some say they die quick but I have had mine for years, theyre black...really cool.

yes, especially when acclimated. 1.023-1.025. As far as I know all snails have intolerance of water parameter changes.

Maybe that is why i have so many empty snail shells in the bottom of the tank now. When they were shipped to me they had no water at all. So I floated them for 30 min or so and turned them loose.

Well, it could be your light cycle.. What of your cleaners? Got snails??

BTW lights are only on for about 8 hours a day and have them cycle off for 15 min every 2 hours as well. I do not know about phosphate levels as I dont test for it or Cal for that matter.

Light cycle seems good. You had snails shipped without water!!!!!
Wow. I am suprised that any of them were alive at all. And snails need acclimation too because of the parameters. try to get a couple from your local store if you can, not too many yet,( I cant stand when sites tell people to get 1 snail per gallon, that many is not needed with other inverts) and see what happens...they'll mow that algae away

if the algae is hard its coraline which is a good thing. if its hairy, a phosphate remover would do the trick to stop its growth but idk how safe theyare...never used em. I would say get some hermits they do work on hair algae, and if you see it start becoming a problem...QUICK kill your lights for a day or two. i had awful hair algae outbreak in my tank and i have been struggling for months to get it all out. make sure you attack an algae outbreak before it gets out of hand!!!

If it is hard to scrach off than it is probably coraline algea which is good. Is it growing in little round patches?

i have a question...i have a 24gal nano with a mini refugium in the back compartment. Will adding a phosphate remover to remove hair algae from the DT affect the chaeto in the back/stun its growth/kill it???
