Phosphate Sponge

I was wondering if anyone has used a Phosphate Sponge before, and if it worked?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

BluTang,
I have and it did.
I have a Fluval 304 on my 45 gallon and I used PhosGuard in it when I was having a phosphate problem. I used a mess net filled with the phosguard in one of the middle chambers of the filter. It is safe, though, to just place right in your tank.......in the mess net, of course.......as long as you have it in a place that gets good circulation.
Using a phosphate spong will remove the phosphate, but not the cause of the phosphate. My problem was from a cc substrate (that I replaced with sand) and using tap water for topoffs (I've bought a DI unit). Have you had any luck figuring out why your phosphates are elevated?

I'm thinking that it is because of my protein skimmer, it is a Seaclone 100 and I think that the Maxi-Jet 1200 pump is getting rather tired, it hasn't skimmed anything for about 2 weeks now, so I'm getting a new pump tomorrow....we did a tap water check and it says the phosphate level is .2-.3.....I was thinking about getting a PUR Water Filter to eliminate that problem....should this work for me? The hair algae is getting ready to drive me nuts. Hopefully the new skimmer motor will help remove all the "crap" that is causing the phosphate levels...let me know what you think.
See ya!

BluTang,
I know that, for me, the CC was my main problem. I admit I wasn't spending as much time vacuuming it as I probably should have, but once I removed it, my phosphates dropped significantly. Sometime after I got the phosphate under control, I was still having a nusance algea problem.....all over my glass a day or so after a thorough cleaning. I beefed up my clean-up crew......big time. I brought my total snail population to around 40 and my hermits to about 30. I also added a Prism protein skimmer......not expensive but pretty efective. I have no algea problem any more.
I'm not familiar with the water purifier you've mentioned. I bought a "portable" RO/DI unit that I saw on the net and is carried at PetSmart stores. It's $69.99, as I recall. Replacement filters are $20 and a filter will handle between 50 and 150 gallons depending upon how much stuff is being removed. I believe the manufacturer is AquaChem, but I'll check, if you're interested.

BluTang,
I just checked Petsmart's web site and found one. It's called "Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Filtration System". Petsmart's web has it on sale for $36.99. I don't know if that sale price is also offered at a store.
I do believe in "you-get-what-you-pay-for" but instead of spending a couple hundred dollars, for the price, this one works fine for me.
