I have this green moss like stuff growing in my tank. How do I get rid of it and what is it? I've heard putting a phosphate pad in the filter will take care of it?

Sounds like hair algae. Don't put a phosphate pad in unless you are certain that you have phosphates. So test for phosphates and test for nitrates as they both are fertilizers for nusiance algae. Also, make sure that you are using RO or RO/DI water but test your water source also. Last, make sure you have good flow in your tank (powerheads). Certain fish, crabs, and snails will help keep the algae down as well.

Take a look at what you're feeding and how often. Running a bag of carbon for a while might help also. Siphon out as much of the algae as you can with vinyl tubing (squeejee it off the glass with the end of the tubing).

Good call. Most if not all frozen foods are packed with phosphates. To eliminate them completely make your own food. To reduce them, rinse and drain the food really well before you feed.

Are you using Tap water or RO/DI?
- Look at the types of salts your using as well.
I am currently over coming a hair alege problem. For awhile when I stopped caring about my tank. (Yes as horrible as that sounds) I stopped mixing ro/di because my unit busted. - However I am now using a new RO/DI and correcting the issue.
I use phoslock and water changes. - Keep doing them... find a clean up crew. - From what I hear in another thread Emerald Crabs are the way to go. - I'm gonna give it a try. - They're cheap!

I use ro/di water and nothing else. I did put a phosphate pad in a week ago, and it hasn't done a thing. What is phoslock?

What type of salt do you use?
What do you feed the fish?
Do you use any additives in the water?
Do you have a phosphate test kit?

I use Instant Ocean with ro/di water. Do not have a phosphate kit. I add coralife trace elements 1xper week. I feed frozen krill, mysis, nori, flake
