I am looking at getting a new camera and would like to know when you are looking at them do you look for more mexapixels or more optical zoom??

I would be more concerned with optical zoom over megapixs...they kinda go hand in hand though. Usually any camera that has a good( 10x or 12x) optical zoom already has enuf pixs.
that being said, I would buy a 12x optical zoom 6 or 7 megapixels over a 6x zoom 12 megapixels everytime. If you are not printing large (11x17) or larger, there is no need for anything over 6 megapixels.
Just my opinion, but if you are really seroius I would look into slr's instead of point and shoot. The difference is amazing, but they are also way expensive. It all comes down to your particluar budget.

Thanks to you both. My current camera is an oldy Sony 3.2 MP with a 3x optical zoom. I must say I have taken some beautiful pictures with it and I even made an 8x10 of our love bird we use to have the the definition in the feathers I was very amazed I get so many complements about that pic.
I would love the SLR's believe me. I even have my SLR Canon Rebel film camera this was my pride and joy in the day and i still use it today and love it. For traveling it is a bit big.
I was looking at either the Panasonic or Canon 7.1 MP with a 6x optical zoom or the inbetween as I call it the not so compact but not an SLR either that has 6 MP with 10-12 x optical zoom.

Let me replace that ragged looking water lily with a better shot of a newly opened bloom in my pond.

I have the kodak z612...12x optical 6.1 megapix. I think as far as point and shoots go, it is one of the best available. The canon s3's are nice, but they feel cheap to me. It also has a li-ion battery with it takes shots for days without recharging, which is a big feature for me, I will never again buy a cam without one.

Thanks for that reply. I have heard that Kodak has some nice cameras. London Drugs here where I live swears by them over the other brands. They actually put Sony at the bottom of their list.
In the consumer guide I have they rate Kodak as very high indeed.
The kind you have and megapixel and zoom is what I should be aiming for. I always have my Sony to fall back on if I want but zoom is really something I have been looking for as we do alot of travelling.
Do you think you could post some random pictures from your Kodak for me that have not been touched up??

Check out the Pentax W30. I am thinking about getting one. It's got a good set of point and shoot features and it's water proof up to 10ft. Can you say macro shots?

Lol, extreme macro shots.
Do you like to mess with settings? or do you prefer point and shoot? There's so many good digital cameras out there now, plenty of crap ones, but far more decent ones. If you don't mind me asking, is there a price range you're hoping to stay in? This can greatly narrow down what will best fit you.

Don't forget to have a look at ISO ratings too. They make a huge difference when shooting without the flash on. The higher the better.

I just took this one of my dog from about 25 ft away to show you some zoom detail. I have tons of tank pics up here which you have seen. so this is a fresh non tank pic
I like how you can almost count his whiskers from 25 ft away.

Thanks Mike for your reply. You are so right about the good and bad. That is the beauty of the digital, snap away and delete later :)
Thanks for the compliments, I try my very best to take clear good pictures no matter what. I am a bit fussy that way but sometimes things don't always work out that way and you have to settle for the best you have with that camera.

Well I have my full size film Canon Rebel SLR and to totally honest I very seldom will use the manual features. I mostly use the point and shoot on it unless it will not focus in on something.
My Sony is point and shoot all the time, it does come with manual setting somewhere but I have never used them.
Price range is much different here in Canada from what you all pay in the USA but I would like to look at no more than $300.00 CDN the reason I say this is for instance the Canon A710 IS is on sale right now for $369.98 CDN give that camera a few more months and it will drop in the $279.00 range. The SLR's tend to stay quite high here, the Nikon D80 is on sale for $1399.98 so that gives you some idea.
I would probably look at something of and upgrade from what I have we call them the "Long zoom range" they are not small compacts but not full size SLR's either.
I have the 2007 Consumer Report Guide they list the Canon Power Shot S2 IS and the Fujifilm FinePix S5200 as the top models in their opinion both are 12x optical zoom.
For Advanced Compact Cameras: Kodak Easy Share P880 and the Fujifilm FinePix E900
The list goes on and on

Now can I ask you about the ISO rating??
Everything I have read on the different makes of cameras out there today that give their opinions always say that, "This camera at higher ISO ratings has more noise or purple fringing at the higher ratings". So when you sat the higher the better now I am confused.
:notsure:

I sure do, my pond is a formal design. We like the formal look that compliments our yard. The lily was new to the pond last year and I hope that this year it will cover more of the water surface.
This pond is only 375 gal and is home to 3 goldfish. My one big baby is now been in there for 2 years and was purchased as a comet goldfish costing .39 cents and measures 6" long now and a very deep body of the most bright orange/red with a white tail. The other goldie is a nicely marked orange and white baby and the third is a Shubumkin goldfish of calico colors. The latter of the two are new and small yet.

He/She is so adorable and a very nice shot. Say is that the same dog in your avatar??
Very nice closup and definition too. Say what do you think about the Kodak's lens?? I know lot of people that will only buy a certain camera because of the lens they have.

It is a he, and yes it is the same dog in my avatar, that is his "play mean" face.
I love everything on this cam, for the money. It is solid, feels good in your hand, and takes overall good shots. When I was shopping I thought it was the best out of all the point and shoots available. That being said, I would love to have a nikon d200 or something along those lines, but I will have to wait a while on that...
