I am better with a film camera then digital, anyway here goes.
1st camera must be steady if no tripod then lean on the back of a chair to hold arms steady,
2nd no flash
3rd the faster the shutter speed the larger the appature needs to be (more light), it is a combonation of both that gets a total pic.
4th don't worry about centering a fish in the middle of the frame, break the square into 4 sections
5th when you are ready to shoot EXHALE to help steady yourself.
I can get into more details later right now i am writing with one hand ( left ) right hand is totally blown up hit with a baseball doing a game tonight.soon as swelling goes down i will give more info.

so saxman what do you recomend is a good /farely descent price camera to get for good pics?
Renee (Cranberry) is really the photographer between us, but she's a Canon fan, and uses SLR's exclusively. After trying a few of the "advanced hobbyist" models, she finally settled on a 5D Mk II, but I realize that this is a bit more camera than most folks want or need.

The EOS Rebel XS comes in a kit that includes everything you need, including the lens (18-55mm zoom), and I think the MSRP is around $550. The nice thing is that you can swap lenses out as you develop your own shooting style and needs (good glass is the biggest difference you can make in your pix).

You also might be able to find a used 20D quite cheaply (they're up to 60D in the mid-level SLR's now).
Another good camera is the Nikon CoolPix series. We use these at work, but I prefer SLR's.

There were a lot of 40D's that had some kind of backplane focusing issue. Renee went thru 2 cameras and sent one to Canon to be fixed pretty much right out of the box, which worked, but I told her to buy a pro model and be done with it for awhile since photography is a big hobby for her. Now she doesn't feel like she needs to constantly upgrade her mid-level camera. However, if your camera is focusing OK, you don't have that issue.
I'd hit Renee (Cranberry) up regarding settings...

OUe busted cameras were the nikon coolpix and I agree with the missus that they took better pics than this cannon we have now. But our first digital camera was a canon and I prefer to have a canon. I just wish this entry level camera was better. If I found a benny on the sidewalk, I would get another nikon coolpix.
