Pickling lime is food grade calcium hydroxide. The same stuff in the bottle from Kent and other places. Except is is a little coarser and as a result a little harder to dissolve. It is much cheaper however.

If you have had success with Kalkwasser, you will have the same results with PICKLING LIME.
It is the same stuff. The cons are that it tends to be a little coarser and as a result does not dissolve as well. My LFS sells a jar of Kent Kalkwasser for $15 for a container the size of a Noxima jar. I can buy a 1lb bag of PICKLING LIME for $1.67 and they are the SAME THING. Not sure what it costs at Wal*mart.
Get past the name.
I am just passing along some info so other hobbyists like me who are on a tight budget can still function. I can give you links to other sites where ppl are successfull using PICKLING LIME.
Do a search on yahoo using pickling lime and kalkwasser. You'll get tons of hits, read other ppls experience with it. If you decide to dose with Kalkwasser, I would recommend at least trying it.
No I don't use it yet, because I don't need it yet. When I do I will be building a Kalkwasser (Nilsen) reactor and using PICKLING LIME instead of Brand X.
Here is my email if you need links

Yup....same stuff....same results.....lots cheaper.......I use ball pickling lime...........does seem a lil courser and may leave a lil more sediment than real kalk....but for my system its worked fine...........ph/calcium/alkalinity all stable and phosphates are non-detectable

you can find it at walmart or any grocery store for that matter in the canning supplies, near the mason jars and parafin wax. I picked up a lb of the ball pickling lime for 1.39 +tax at my local albertsons yesterday. looks just like kalk. (try tasting it ;) ) the container is green with gold stripes and has a red label that says pickling lime. HTH
