Nice pictures! Have you thought about adding anything like maybe a cleaner shrimp or a small clown goby? I would recommend a fire shrimp i love mine, great personality and great color!

My reason for not thinking it is a good idea probably has more to do with my tank being at work. For example, if I get to work on Mondy after a weekend and see three half-dead hermits, I am going to want to do a 50% water change, but my boss may have a different agenda on Monday morning! SO for me, it's not ideal.
WHat do you think about a little sexy shrimp? DO they do anything cool?
I really like my sexy shrimp. They wave their butts around and are very cute. Mine would rub it's tush on my zoas until I got a small RBTA and now she rubs her tush on that all day

Ok, I just got the final of the livestock today, but there may be a problem:
2 Nass Snails (never a problem)
1 itty bitty Sexy Shrimp (too funny, makes me laugh every time)
And finally, one mischievous Emerald Crab.
Ok ok, so it's not a mantis shrimp
, but I just went to look at the QT tank, and the Sexy is hiding, and all 4 Nass Snails are hiding too. 10 minutes earlier, I had to pull the Emerald off of a Nass.
Now granted, he may have been checking the Nass out, but my Emerald in my 14 gal is often seen picking at zoas, and I dont want him to think he can do that in my pico!
So, should i drop his tiny butt in the 14gal and let him eat detritus and algae til his heart is content, or should I introduce him to the pico? I REALLY wanted to keep him in the pico, as it is starting to grow algae, and think he will be a good cleaner.
Do you think he is just checking out the Nass' because there is no algae in the QT?
HELP!!! I want a peaceful, low maintenance work tank. Anyone seen the dark side of Emeralds?
PS- this one is a male.

I almost detroyed everything in this tank.
I come back to work after 4 days to find the lid was taken off the pico!

30% evap, salinity off the charts, algae everywhere!!! HAha, I was freaking out. I still haven't figured out if this was an oversight on my part (probable in ALL other aspects of my life, but I can't believe I am capable of such an oversight with a 3 gallon pico on a 4 day weekend!!!
Anyway, slowly brought it to correct levels over 15 hours, swept algae off walls and LR, Vaccummed algae infested substrate, and did a 20% water change. It looks almost as perfect as it did. After tomorrow, it will be back to 1oo%.
DONT FORGET THE LID! AND MAKE SURE YOUR FAMILY/CO-WORKERS KNOW NOT TO MESS WITH IT!!
So, the sexy is happy, shaking her a$$ all day, and the new emerald is just happy he has some remaining bubble algae to eat.
All is good for now. Updated pics in 48 hours...

Im getting a fish! Im taking the plunge. What kind do you like the best:
a tiny juvi false perc (I could probably house it for 3-6 months)
a clown goby (I kinda like how these perch)
a yellow watchman (only issue here is there is not a lot of "floor space" for him to sit on. Do they like hanging out on live rock/corals?
Any other suggestions are welcome (except the suggestion to not add a fish. Believe me, I know the pros and cons, I've read every argument there is for both sides, and I am very aware of what it takes it keep the tank in check).

Ahh that's awesome Alex, thanks for the kind words. Im really happy with the progress of this little guy too. Please keep me updated of your progress. And if you are happy with your water params in your larger tank, use 2 gallons from there and skip the cycle
You will be up and running overnight

Good luck bud

I actually added 3 new frags on Friday, and it was a STEAL of a deal! I got:
1 - 1" wide Ricordia shroom. It's silver with white tips with a neon green mouth
12 - green/yellow button polyps
20 - red/blue zoas
All corals mounted on to perfect-sized pieces of LR...and the grand total was...
$38!!!!
YEA!!!!

I found a new LFS near my work that has great frags for really cheap. So when I move next weekend, I think the 14 gal 'Cube might need some new frag friends!

in the filter, did you take out the grate for beneficial bacteria to grow on? i took mine out and just filled the back up with l/r (i did leave in the filter cartridge with the carbon).
Oh Gharner, I missed this question...
BTW, how is the Mantis?
The only fear I have with putting LR in that tiny HOB is there is nothing filtering the sediment from the HOB's motor. Have you ever put anything solid in a HOB? I added salt once to a FW tank, and it immediately jammed the motor.
Let me know if you have done this, and if so, how it works.
Right now, I am just running homemade carbon bags. No LR, but it is a great idea and since I have upped my bioload, I should probably upgrade the filter now. We could probably find one for our tanks with a separate compartment for like $20. It would have to be clear though...mini-fuge is so easy with clear HOB.
Although, how would I put the lid on with a larger HOB? Gotta see if I can cut that lid...

i actually didnt get the mantis yet.....im low on money right now hahahaha. ill probably get the little guy sometime in february or march. as for the filter, i did put l/r in the filter....no problems yet. the first night that i had the tank though a tiny grain of sand jammed the filter!!! it woke me up in the middle of the night (which is good cause the filter probably would have burned out) and i had to take it apart and fix it. i would like to make a fuge...that would be cool.
your tank looks great
great deal on the corals too!

I recently started a 3 gallon Eclipse. I'm just having a problem with red algea all over the substrate. Everything else is doing good. My zoas, mushroom and Springer Dottyback. I just have to solve that problem. Is a Kenya the same as a capanella tree?

Yea, I guess if I add rubble that is more on the hard side (as opposed to outer/crumbling rock), I will get little break-down and wont get pieces of rock in the motor. You got lucky though. Once I break those cheap HOBs, I can never get them to work again!

That Eclipse has a 6 watt floro on it! Wow! Why not get the Deco with an 18w 50/50?? It's $40, and has everything.
Capanella/Kenya tend to be used interchangeably. I dont know 100%, but I believe they are the same. They look exactly alike.

After days of searching, I found him...a 1/4 inch false perc! And guess what? I'm probably taking him back tomorrow.
DOnt get me wrong, he has room to roam. But I thought about my clown in my 14 gal, and he likes to zoom up and down all the time. I figured I would see if it was just mine, but this juvi perc wants to swim all over too! He is constantly looking at the surface like, Is this all there is?"
HAha. He DID go on an adventure before i left the office. He was following 'something' in the LR. He kept diving between 2 rocks. Then he would come up, watch whatever "it" is, and then dive down again. Im thinking it was the nass snail with the abnormally long foot, but not 100%.
ANyway, my other idea is to buy a 6 gal nano. This is probably the largest tank I could have at my desk without my manager getting concerned. As it is, the 3 gal distracts EVERYONE, even my manager's manager's manager.
So, I have a decision to make. Hopefully I come in tomorrow and he is hosting the hairy mushroom. That would make it easier to keep him. But I just feel like he deserves larger.
Will update with pics on the new corals tomorrow.
