if the mods allow i can say the name of the chain but its not hard to figure out 2 words first word starts with a "p" and ends with a "d" and the second word starts with a "d" and ends with a "s"..they have stores in every state...with the purple tang in the 10 gallon was...some kind of large angel fish a 2 inch blue hippo tang with severe hlle and bacterial infection and had no color...and some other fish...they threw me out of the store when i told them politely that i think that there fish is overpriced and very ill and needs to be treated asap..they said what do i know.. i showed them my pics of my fish and i said this is what i know ...and they said ok please leave.
Really? You brought pictures of your fish into this chain store? The letters are not ringing any bells. The store may not be nation wide.

petland is pretty disgusting. the only thing i get from them r frozen fish food ocassonally. the live rocks they sell were full of green hair algae. u really cant expect much from a chain pet store.

This is just like thet ***** bashing threads...
The quality of a pet store's aquatic department depends more than anything else on the staff working at that particular store. ***** and Petland are the same in these respects. I'm certainly not condoning the conditions in these photographs, I've seen plenty of mom n' pop LFSs in my area that I wouldn't buy a fish at any time, due to all of the reasons we bash Petland and ***** over. Again, it's all about who runs the departments.
Now, Petland in particular is a special case. They are franchised. Therefore the living conditions of the livestock, livestock quality, etc are all more controlled by each store's ownership more than anything else.
I won't shop at ***** for anything, and Petland I have a real moral conflict with. The Petland stores in my area (there are 2) have outstanding aquatics departments with some of the cleanest tanks and healthiest, best quality livestock I've seen. My issue with them is that I have a real issue with any store that sells dogs (read: puppy mills). So I sit torn between going to Petland to get amazing livestock and my issue with the dogs. At any rate, I can tell you that the issues described with Petland stores, IME, is more individuated than a true "chain."

i asked my wife to get me from that store 3 small rocks size of tennis balls
they were $10 a lb..she got 2 lb's of the worst rock i ever saw for $20
I very upset with them. but its close by and my friends down the block is all out of LR he sells premium cured fiji rock with lots of coraline alagae on it for $5 per lb if you buy over $100 or $6 lb.

Yeah, that's why I didn't get it.
I thought it was the other terrors that begin with p's.

seriously they don't know anything they dont know thedifference between an clown triggerfish and a clown fish..thier staff is very uneducated...sometimes i get steals like a sixline wrasse for $7.99 because they think its a royal gramma lol...anyways they are so over priced with everything its crazy...they haveterrible customer support they threw me out of the store because i told them thier $150 purple tang see pic above was grey and dying with bite marks all over it hllle ick every disease with a niger trigger ina 10 gallon..i was polite. its just sad because its convienient for fresh water thier tanks are so clean but the 4 sw tanks they have the biggest a 30 gallon and 4 10 gallons is pathetics but youcan take advantage and get deals since they dint know..they were selling an aussie harlequin tusk for $39.99 and a royal gramma for $40..they dont know what is what and what is going on.. that all they are good for i go in from time to time to save fish...if that purple tang was not $150 i would have it looking healthy in 3 weeks...but i cant spend $150 on a 2.5 inch PT.. thats almsot dead. but i wouldl ove to buy the fish to save the life. its hurts to see livestock kept so tightly placed and poorly maintained.

I have to disagree with all chain stores being bad, I think it's more based off of the employs that work there. If you happen to go to a place with high schoolers that don't really care at all about their job then the animals are obviously not going to be in good shape but not all stores are like that. The chain by me has some very nice looking animals though their selection is very minimal. All of the fish are in different setups and not mixed together.

the point was they claimed this 2 " PT was healthy and $150 plus nyc Tax..!! i showed them what a healthy PT looks like. not trying to bash the store just showing all us hobbyist and aquarist how much nicer and healthier our livestock is then in some restaurants aquariums and def. fish stores.

I think that is sooo sad, if only you saw this store out here where I live. theres hardly any saltwater fish but the few they have are almost 60% of them are sick laying at the bottom like they cant breath. I just want to save them all. I wish they wouldnt sell saltwater if they didnt wanna take the time to care for them! I also cant believe the difference in prices everywhere. Today I found a purple tang, biggest I have ever seen! only $195 and got my 6" Clown Triggerfish for only $75, these were at a differnt store that really cares about the fish and have lots of knowledge of them.
