Well I believe that if your tank is cycled it should not have any spikes of ammonia because the bacteria on your live rock should turn it into nitrates which is much less toxic to your fish than ammonia and nitrites. You can have a mini cycle if you put uncured rock in your tank after it is cycled from the "die off" though. Hope this helps you understand, hopefully some one who has been in this hobby longer than I have can add on to what I said or correct any mistakes I may have made.

what kind of tank?
ur aquascape is very cool. usually u dont se to much good aquascaping in nano's but tht is impressive.

also how long did it take ur tank to cyle. i didnt foloow the thread till now but it seemed like it was set up and cycled in the same day? maybe u took the pics and made the thread just now?

no..lol, it didn't cycle in one day, but I bought cured live rock, and it was in a tote with sw and a pump, for several days, it was packed very well, and I didn't see much die off at all, we scrubbed it all down, then rinsed it off in sw, and put it in the tank with the ls and the fresh batch of sw...
I dont pretend to know much about this hobby, ive been doing so much reading over the past few months, here and other places, asking alot of questions at two LFS, and I think my brains will explode soon with all the new info I have crammed in there! LOL
pics were not all taken on the same day, now the water is very clear, and its looking good.
we have a very good friend at a lfs, very trustworthy (otherwise, he will own my tank and be giving me a new one! LOL) he said the cycle/spike could have happened in the tote.
Idk....? we'll see as time goes by. so far so good though!
btw, its a 24g nano cube....so far I love it!
