Pic of the side I can get to

One of my two emerald crabs...I love there personalities!

Something a friend gave me...no idea what it is, next to a skeleton of sorts

Another random item that a friend gave me

I think these are some form of mushrooms

And my maroon. One of the first fish I put in my tank

Thanks for the pics! That tank looks strangely familiar; I remember when ours looked like that

I would definitely paint that back glass. You can roll on some Krylon. You could even get some ultra dark window tint film and put it back there to see if you want black or not (about $12 at your local auto parts store).
I don't really have any suggestions except to keep on keeping on. OK, one suggestion: plan ahead.
What is your ultimate goal for this tank? Softies? Mixed? Once you upgrade your lighting and filtration you will have options. I had in my mind's eye what I wanted the tank to look like (aided by placement suggestions from Spanko). If you eventually want high light loving coral, I would consider moving what you have up high now so have the real estate available later. The top of my rock was the last area populated because I knew well in advance that I wanted SPS there. Envision what you want in your tank and where things go, then work towards that.
So far, I see in your tank Clove Polyps, Green Star Polyps (careful with placement, they spread like crazy) and some Hairy Mushrooms. I'm not sure what that is in the background of pic #6. Your rock is stable, right?
Other than that, I think things look really good! I was where you are about 1 1/2 year ago.
Keep it up!

Pic #6 is just an extreme close up of the top of the rock pile. I have a really hard time keeping my rock stacked. What is the best way to glue them together (i guess you would use some glue)? I don't currently have a LFS, hopefully soon, but as of right now I have been just getting a lot of help from friends. Bought some things at Petsmart...etc... I am not entirely sure what kind of setup I want to end with....I think once I get my lights upgraded and know better what I can and cannot have, then I will start making a plan...so far I have been just sticking the few things where they will not get knocked around.

look likes xenia in pic 4 that you say you are not sure of. Be careful if they are xenia, they are extremely fast growers and can over take a whole area. East to cut away though and give back to your friend.lol
Rockwork looks cool!

Thanks :) I have been struggling with the stupid rockwork! well if it is some sort of xenia it is definitely is spreading fairly quickly :) I have been having problems with my poor kenya trees lately though. I am not sure what exactly is going on with them. Hopefully they will pull through.

Slice Jr. LOL....
Working with that type of tank would seem frustrating while aquascaping. I can see where all you can do is go up. Nice tho...

Yep, a column style tank only gives you 2 options: go up this high or go up THIS high. Look at Novahobbies' 37g column...same thing. Dutchswan also has this same tank and his rock is a bit higher than mine...where did he go, anyway? I sent him an email weeks ago but haven't gotten a response, wonder how his tank is doing??
Many months ago, Spanko linked to some pics of other column tanks and they all were similar rockwork styles...goes with the territory.
and...ain't nobody my "Jr"...I'm still stumbling through trying to learn this thing.

Ah nothing like the smell of a new tank. Keep on asking question. One suggest since you do not have an over flow system, when doing water changes use cup or something to remove surface water (a lot of proteins build up there).
