I just picked him up today. I'm adding sand from my display tank and a little more rock tommorow. Hopefully that will hold him over until my 30 gal acrylic tank finishes cycling:

better not stick your fingers in there or they will be making a new finger out of a toe or something at the hospital

dont know much about mantis except that aparrently there are "slashers" and "smashers", which both sound equally horrible. lol. so which one is he?
i actually think theyre really cool, and they look great, but they scare the crap out of me.

peacock mantis shrimp (Odontactylus scyllarus) are "smashers" this means that they have club shaped apendages on their forearms. thats why they are so dangerous with glass stuff. search for peacock mantis vs. crab on youtube and you will find out why lol.

that's a real "finger smasher" you got there. Gives me the willys just thinking of him sneaking up on your hand when you ain't looking.

Where did you get him?
Also, has anyone ever really seen a mantis crack an aquarium? Seems like a lot of people know its possible but I've never ever seen a thread that says ..."Mantis cracked my tank"

Thanks everybody. I'm going to get a new heater at work on wednesday. I'll post some more pics and a feeding video later.
@UKCATS - I got the mantis at the LFS that I work at. My manager likes to order things that people don't see very often(mappa puffers, blue devil groupers, octopus, gold flake angels, electric eels etc.) As soon as I saw that we had got him in I immediately put it on hold. Also I've never heard of one breaking a glass tank but i figured i didn't want to take the chance.

Yeah its a little steep but i think it was due mostly to him being so large. I'll post some more pics on sunday when i get a day off. I know this is going to sound cruel but i fed him his first live food yesterday. I threw in a gorilla crab I found in my DT and i added 3 damsels and figured i'd just replace them when he caught them. The crab lasted all of 30 seconds and its now 24 hours later and i have no damsels.
So i think im going to stick to frozen foods.
