It might help if you post what size tank you are working with so that we can post pics of similar size tanks. Also you can try a search, you'll find a ton of threads with examples and pictures as well as creative ways to make sure that the rocks are stable in your tank.

If it is not out for a long time,a few minutes you would be fine. But if you are going to have it out of the tank for 45 minutes or so, maybe keep a bucket of saltwater so you can keep it there untill you need it. But even if out for a short while the die off you would have wouldn't cause to much of a problem.

Mandarin W re-enforces everything I hear . . . at the very minimum, if it's out of water keep the rock damp by misting it with SW often (nearly constantly?), or drapped with SW-soaked newspaper (Some may advocate doing both).
My plan is that if I can't build the rockpile as I wish inside the tank, I'll put the rocks and some SW into a very large Tupperware-ish tub and work with it while it's still emersed. If I have to break/split some, or plastic-cuff some together, I figure I can accomplish that in the tub . . . I'll undoubtedly get drenched in the process (Especially if I'm wielding a hammer and chisel), but ought to be some fun, at least if water's flying about, my labrador will want to help!

How do you get pieces to stay together. What is the namebrand of the stuff you use. Thank you for all of your help.

Here's my tank! Yeah, I have a "thing" for live rock. It just amazes me & I keep 2 magnifying glasses near my tank. My favorite rock is the bottom left, looks like a little tug boat! There are lots of open spaces between, over & under the rocks for flow and for my Coral beauty to zip in and out of.

Jesses89 - Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, The "orange Stuff" is Incroaching Gargonia" excuss the spelling.
It is a very EASY coral to keep. Very simular to Green Star Polyps. They don't need alot of light, just good flow, and filter feed. I just put mine in, and forgot about it. and in a few months it was all over the tank. Hint, put if on a rock that is a good distance from the other rocks. It will spread anywhere it can reach. But it is pretty when it is flowing in the tank.
As far as what I use to bind my rocks together, patience. time. and alot of walking and cussing, and lets not forget a bud light or two.
:jumping:
Really, I don't use anything to hold me rocks together. Never had, when I first got into the hobby no one told me there was any such thing,
Take your rock, look at each piece, look for natural nooks, cranies, forks, and other natural things on the rocks, then see how they will fit into, or onto the other rocks, Sort of like "legos". Then fit them together, and good hint is to alway try to suport each rock with three others. If you have force pushing on each rock from several different angles they are more likely to stay, even with turbos snail in your tank. I don't glue them together because you never know down the road you may need to move a couple rocks around to make room for a new coral.
