Are they too noisy for anyone?
was thinking of pairing it up with a watchman goby, but if it's too noisy at night so i can't sleep I won't get it.
(heard someone say it sounds like a marble hitting the glass)

I'm pretty sure that pistol & mantis are two diferent types. In any event their "clicking" is quite similar in intensity. If you're a light sleeper and your tank is in close proximity to where you sleep, I'd advise against it.

I think it all depends on the pistol shrimp, mainly the size of the shrimp. And, it also depends on how loud of a sound you can handle without it being annoying. The few times I've heard one, I didn't think it was anything I'd ever be annoyed by, but yes, it does sound like a marble hitting the glass, maybe a little quieter. I love any symbiotic relationship, so I'd say go for it, I'd love to do that myself someday. And, Flaming, pistol shrimp are different from mantis shrimp.

I have three in my 125 gallon reef tank. They were hitchikers on my LR. They do not make much for noise at all. Just an occasional click and usually when I am near the tank fussing. They are very, very shy, but very pretty. I want to get a goby to put in my tank now, backwards to most peoples experiences!

hey christine,
Do they have southdown sand in minnesota? I was thinking of getting some up here, none at the home depots.
Oh yeah how is the canada/U.S. thing down there, I heard In grand forks and fargo they have signs up in restaurants that say"we don't serve canadians" and cars are being trashed with manitoba license plates.
Don't know for sure I'll find out because my buddy went there for a week(gotta take advantage of the cheap alcohol at the border LOL).
Like different view points in the U.S and your president, many canadians disagree with us not joining the war. There are pro-war protests in our city that sometimes out number the anit-war activists.
Anyway the loss of lives in any situation is unfortunate.

I don't know if we have Southdown sand here. I bought expensive Carib Sea sand before Id ever heard of Southdown, -oh well.
I know nothing about any hostility toward Canadians here. But, I live in a pretty diverse metropolitain area. Maybe up near the border in hicksville they act like that, but not here. The cities you mentioned are not what I would consider as places 'open to diversity'. People who choose to act in bigoted ways have much easier-to-find targets than Canadians here. I am sorry to hear of such clearly disgusting behavior. Doesn't make much of a point when you oppose violence with acts of vandalism. As far as the war goes, in the Twin Cities, we just have protests at the state capitol and such.
Dont worry about the noise that a pistol shrimp makes, its no big deal at all.

Hope you don't mind a question within your post, but could you tell me what the relationship between the pistol and watchman is all about? I keep seeing it here, but never what they do for each other (or whatever it is they do). Thanks :D

supossedly the pistol shrimp and the yellow watchman goby form a relationship together.
The goby burrows a hole while the pistol shrimp guards the entrance. they live together like that.
well that's what I have read.

Thanks, I was soooo wondering what the who-ha was about. Don't sound so interesting as I thought it would be, but a thought for future tanks. Thanks again :D
