Does anyone know anything about Pistol Shrimps and if they are reef safe. I was going to get about 4 of them for my 180. Also would they get along with other inhabitants such as Cleaner shrimps? Any info would be appreciated.

Hey cadbury, hit "search" and put in pistol shrimp..there are quite a few post and that way you can get several veiws from people..but, I wouldn't want one in mine...even though I think I have one that I cant catch....YET.

I already checked out pistol shrimp under search and didn't get exactly what I was looking for. I want one also in the 55 I'm about to set up. Just curious if and what they will kill and not kill, and how well they play with others.

I have one in a 1 gallon that im moving to my 50. They are reef safe but you must be careful that your rocks are stable cause they burrow. Another cool thing is that if you are lucky you can pair it up with a burrowing goby like the watchmans. Its cool to see the symbiosis. As for "playing well" I have not had it with other shrmp. I imagine it would be territorial of its burrow but they dont stray far from that. Also small corals on the ground will be stolen and brought back to his layer. Hope that helps.

I think deveats means a mantis shrimp, not a pistol shrimp. I have been trying to get a pistol shrimp for about the last month so he can pair up with my watchman goby. From what I have heard they are fine to put in a tank, they are capable of making a loud sound with their claw but I have never heard of it cracking glass, though their are many stories about mantis shrimp breaking glass and splitting or actually severing peoples fingers. I do not know how friendly they are with other shrimp, but I would imagine if you got one and put him in a tank with a goby he could partner with he would just make him a burrow and live peacfully, or at least that is what I hope for when I get mine.

im pretty sure they r i ws into them for a while.u could hear them at night.o and mantis shrimp crack ur glass.there great with goby's

Well i was looking to get one to pair up with a yellow watchman. The tank I want mine in will not have much lr. I was even thinking of putting a purple lobster in the tank also, or maybe just one or the other. The tank doesn't have enough light to make a great reef tank but may try some shrooms, and other low light guys. I wanted to go with more interesting inverts though. So before i start buying a bunch of different inverts it would be good to know that I'm not throwing my money away

Actually the reason I brought up Pistol Shrimps is that they have them included here in their packages, I also noticed how they have this weird relationship with watchman Goby's? I just thought this was cool and thought of maybe getting two mated pairs for my 180? I just don't know if they bother other inhabitants such as crabs or other shrimp, but I'm going to do a search and hopefully I'll find my answer.

Maybe I should start a new topic with this but...Will a pistol shrimp have the same relationship with a sleeper goby? I have a orange sleeper goby and was thinking about putting in a pistol shrimp. Also, the fish store we go to said that they don't carry the kind of pistol shrimp that have a relationship with gobies. They get their's from the atlantic and they said the right shrimp for this comes from the pacific.
