I am picking up 125lbs of LR tomorrow for my 180 and I was wondering how people arrange it in their tanks. Do you just stack it in hopes it won't fall?? Do you affix them all together using reef glue or epoxy?? Or do you use a different method??
place to how you like. method i use is cable ties. tie two rocks by using holes in the rock i know a few people use cable ties and an egg crate. glue would be difficult as youll want to keep all the good bacteria damp untill you get home then place in the tank. just my two pennies on this
I never use anything, just make sure you put it together so it doesn't fall. Use other rocks to reinforce it and build it up strong! By the way, GO COWBOYS HAHAHHAHHAHAHHAH!
I forget where i saw this but- several pieces were threaded together by fishing line, to form a circle, which then was placed over a standing piece of plastic pipe.(bout 1" diameter) Then several more pieces, making a slightly smaller circle, placed on top of the first, and so on as high as you want it. The pipe had a platform at the base, looked very simple to do. Hope you can picture what im trying to describe! With this i think it would be kind of sweet looking if it were upside down!(smaller circles on the bottom) however you want it!
I should have mentioned the rock i'm getting isn't live anymore....it's all dry rock.....the actual LR will be added later on when I break down my 55.
Cowboys!! HAHAHAH Right!!
Dude, we whooped you up and down the feild both regular games last year! We just ran out of steam when it counted, 1st playoff game. It won't happen this year, believe me!

Exactly!! Who won when it actually counted!!!!!
And if you remember....both the other games were very close games!!!
i used a masonry bit and drilled holes through the rock. then i used an acrylic rod to create rock towers with the rock. once in the tank, i arranged the towers to make a nice aquascaping, that flow can easily get through, and the fish can as well.
If you do dry stack, build a solid base by placing three smaller rocks in a triangular pattern, and than building up from there. Much more stable than trying to place larger rocks on bottom and stabilize a bunch of smaller rocks on top of them.
We just stucks ours in and however it came out was what we kept. It just seemed natural and we kind of liked it that way. Everyone just basically does it by what they like. I know we need to get a bit more as my tank is kind of bare for a 28, but I like less rock then needed so I can see more!
Trial and error here. You start with smaller pieces to bury into the sand so that you reach the bottom or if you stack on the glass before you add sand, then you just have to kind of stack and test. I don't think there is one right way of doing this as every piece of rock is unique and can be stacked in multiple ways.
PS I hate aquascaping so you may not want to listen to me
So I put all my dry rock in the tank......but alot of the rock toward the top is very unstable. How should I secure them?? I tried to use that epoxy putty, but it didn't seem to stick to the rock. Any other ideas??
drill some holes in it. you can use plastic chopsticks from the supermarket for pegs to hold them together.
also, there is stuff called thorite that i have seen used before as well.
check oput this website. there are alot of products that sound interesting for this application- http://www.chargar.com/Products/prod_mf.html
just be sure to check out the MSDS before you order.
