plastic drum cleaning??

i recently got a 55 gallon poly drum for my water changes, top-offs etc. its smells of somethign in there although they said it was cleaned and steralized.
my question is what can i use to clean the drum and wash out with a few times that wouldnt stay in there and harm my water?? of course iw ould fill the water up and let it sit for a few days thewn test to make sure there are no chemicals int here?? any coments or suggestions would be great!
