Plate on the rocks

can I put a long tenticle plate on a flatish rock? I want it to be closer to the light.
I have been eyeing this beautiful coral in the LFS for weeks, where it was under florescent lights. Today I went in and they had just marked it down. I have PC lights. Would it be better to leave it on the sand, 30 or so inches from the light, or on a flat rock 15 inches higher.
has anybody ever kept one on a rock?

I've only seen a few that were placed on the LR and both of them died within a few months. I've had one on the sand bed for over 3 years...was under 4x65 PC's origionally in a 55 gal display. Now sits in a 100 display with 2x400 MH's & 2x110 VHO's...either way I believe they prefer a sand bed over placement in the LR. Mine has a solid calcerious base and could be wedged into the LR but I think placement on the LS is best for them.
