I'm 13 years old and I have a 55 gallon fish only tank. I am hoping to get enough money for christmas to switch it over to a FOWLR tank. How much live rock do you think I should put in there? Also, what fish do you think would be alright to put in there{I'm thinking about some tangs or someting colorful}?
*I currently have a snowflake eel, 4 blue damsils, and a starfish.
*{But might give away my blue damsils to my friend}

50 to 75 lbs. of rock should be good. As far as fish that is more of a personal decision.Some people would like a buch of small fish and some would like a few larger fish. I would do a few dwarf lions myself. And give those damsels away!

Just make sure the fish aren't to small or the eel will eat them. Make sure you keep the top sealed good or the eel will jump out. I'm sure you have heard that before but they will find the smallest whole and jump out.

Live rock is a good idea, IMO. I like watching the coralline grow and the changes it makes over time. Plus fish love to hide in and around it. Typically they say 1-2 lbs per gallon...I've got about 75lbs right now.
I have a 55 FOWLR that I am adding some corals to now.
Sorry if you know this already, but remember to not cycle your lr in the tank with the fish...if there is die off.
Also, you said you want to add some tangs...most people say on here 55 is too small for even 1 tang(even a yellow which I have). If you decide to get one get a small one and be prepared to trade it in before it gets big or upgrade your tank. I love clowns, especially "nemo" type...they have good personality IMO. Good Luck and enjoy the change to LR.

I would just stay away from Tangs all together. They are stress prone. nobody wants to deal with a stressed out fish. As stated clowns are cool. Maybe a small angel. flame angel or something. You already have an eel so you will have to go with more agressive fish. Dwarf Lion would be cool. A bannana wrasse of H Tusk would be sweet. Not sure the starfish would make it though. You would have some awsome color and the clowns and Wrasse are very active fish always swimming. Makes for a nice tank to sit and watch.
If you can find rock that is in an exsisting tank it makes it much easier as you do not have to cycle the rock just be sure to acclimate it and watch you levels afterwords. Goodluck

some say at least one pound per gallon for means of biological filtration. In my opinion you can have a little less for a FOWLR, but for a REEF the more the better.
More swimming room with less also.
