Help! I received some live rock Thursday and this was on one of the pieces. I didn't even know it was alive at first. Today I noticed the red spot in the middle, which I hadn't noticed before. As I was peering in the little red window, all of a sudden it just closed up! Freaked me out! I've been searching all over the internet trying to figure out what it is, but I can't seem to find anything like it. Please help! It's driving me nuts...and I'm driving my husband nuts!

Crap! I was worried my pic wouldn't work. I'm no good at this stuff and my husband's in bed sick. I'll have to tag the pic on when he gets up. Sorry, I'm an idiot.

Yea! My husband awoke from his slumber and was able to help me, so here it is! Now someone please tell me WHAT it is!

It's that whole thing. I even noticed there's another hole on the top where you can see red. I've also noticed when it closes up the hole, the whole thing gets shorter and fatter...and then stretches back out when it opens back up.

By the way, the whole thing moves. It kinda rocks back and forth, but it's stuck to the rock. And the hole on the top end doesn't close, it's open all the time. I wonder if it's maybe some weird kind of clam or something?

It appears to me to be a large tunicate. It should have two openings...if so it is not bad, it is a filter feeder. May not survive long term but nonetheless quite cool.

Awesome! Thanks so much! That's totally what it is! Looked up tunicates online and matches it totally! By the way, couldn't take it back to my LFS because I ordered it from Florida.

They are cool creatures and "higher" inverts all considering. What do you plan on keeping in the tank? Will it be a reef tank?

Yeah, totally a reef tank. I've already got one, but I've become addicted and decided to turn my 44 curved front into a SWT also. My husband gives me a hard time sometimes, but when people come over he's always showing them off. They're always the big hit! I've got a 15 gallon tank I'd like to turn into a sump/refugium for my 55, but when I look at all the sketches and designs I get totally overwhelmed. I know nothing about plumbing.

I am starting my first reef tank. I have never ordered livestock online before. Are you satisfied with what you order? Can you recommend some good sites to order from?
Thanks

Out of respect to the owner and operator of SWF, which sells LR, please do not request links to other sites. Thanks.
