Please let this be enough filtration for a 240 gal

I just purchased that last of what I hope is the needed equipment to set my 240 gal back up. I tore it down when I moved and put the filtration equipment in my 120 now it's time to get both tanks going.
I just purchased the following;
Fluval FX5 canister, rated at 400 gal
Wet/dry filter rated for 200 gal
Coralife UV rated for 250 gal
AquaC EV skimmer rated at 180 gal.
This will be a fish only tank as some members of my 120 are getting too big and of course I want more, don't we all.

That's one reason when I buy I always buy replacement parts also. I have spare lights for the UV, spare media for the fluval etc.

A better skimmer would go a long way. When I had my AquaC EV240 on my 125gal, it was more then enough. But now on my 240gal with a smaller stocklist, the EV240 adequate at best. Your EV180 would be okay with a really light bioload, but even with a moderate stocklist, it would likely be overwhelmed.

keep up a good water change schedule, clean out the canister once a week to keep the nitrates down. maintain your skimmer, don't let the crud build up in the cone. By doing these things you can make just about any tank work.
If you don't do those things and your filtration is marginal you could have huge problems down the road.

I run an FX5 on my 65 gallon reef, I really like it, my water clarity is great and parameters have been good as long as you keep up with maintenance. Now my skimmer - Coral Life 125 has issues.

One reason why I only have that skimmer is that my stand only allows for 21" on the inside, this was the biggest and what I think may be the best that would fit into my stand. I just have enough room for the FX5 also. I do have a sump on my smaller fish tank that eventually I will be taking down that would fit if I start to have problems and it has a skimmer also, rated I think at 125 gal.

Fluval makes nice stuff......Honestly if you haven't put it into service...I'd take the Fluval back (big chunk of change) and the UV (not needed), and get yourself a decent sump and return pump, and there are other skimmer options available for space limits.....

And I have heard the exact oppostite. What I have been told by others is that the UV is highly recommended in a fowlr tank like I will have, just not in a reef tank which I don't want. And with the amount of bioload my large fish and eel create a good mechanical filtration system was recommended, so I got one of the best in the fx5.

UV can and are utilized on all types of setups....I used one on my 240 reef with no ill affects.....The problem is most people don't have a true understanding on how the units work, or how to properly use them......They have to have the correct flow through the unit, and that can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and depending what your trying to eliminate in your setup. You also find that most people plumbed them up and forget about them, till the bulb dies.....UV's do need to be serviced/maintained just like our other equipment we use. The bulbs or quartz sleeves which covers the bulb needs to be kept clean for the unit to be effective at it's job. Most don't do this. Why??? Because it's a hassle. On my unit I run I have a wiper which allows me to clean the sleeve without taking the unit apart or shutting it down. A lot of the units on the market down have the wiper which is a good feature IMHO......
With all that being said, there are reasons people choose to run UV's. Most think or are under the impression that it will eliminate or eradicate parasites or disease from the aquarium.....For this to happen the "bad" has to be in the water column and "free floating" and must pass in front of the bulb to be "killed" or "genetically altered". So we use ICK for instances....depending which stage the ICK is in, the UV is worthless. If your using it for water clarity your water flow needs to the unit changes as well, and does aid with water clarity, but there are other means to get water clarity if you choose to do so..
UV's don't and can't discriminate between good and bad that passes through the unit, so it will kill or alter all that passes in front of the bulb.
