I just went to the LFS and struck gold. I purchased a couple of tanks and stands at a AWESOME price. I am setting up a 37 gl reef tank. I have 2 coral life 150wt halids for lighting and also purchased a Magnum 350 deluxe Marineland filter. There was no room on the tank for anything else, except to go underneath. Now money is not an object, I do want the the best for my pets. Please give me some ideas on filtraton. The LFS store guy seemed very knowledgable and said I would not need a skimmer because of the size. You guys are the experienced and honest people that will tell me the truth. Thanks

Ya, I would use a skimmer. I have a skimmer on my 30 gallon reef. Its for the best :D . And about the filtraition, if you use LR and have a LS bed you wont need a filter. The only real piont of a filter is for water movement and to put carbon into the water.

If money is not an object... would you mind funding my tank? I plan on doing medical research on whether nematocysts can be used to treat tumors :p

on my tank i have 2 fluval 404 canisters bottom filter through the sand.... my tank has been up for a while and i havent had any issues with water quality i just make sure to open them up and clean the pre filter pad and change 2 of the carbon bags every 4-6 weeks ....
as for a skimmer i would get one for your tank it can never hurt to have to much beneficial equipment.... especially if u want to keep some fish in your reef tank just help to get rid of some of the un necessary waste byproducts.... mine seems to collect about 1/4 - 1/2" a day of waste in the capture cup

yea if money isnt a problem, get a skimmer. take back the mag canister and get a wet dry or a sump with live rock in it. i would either get a power compact actinic or vho with the mh. or get the 20k bulbs for the mh. o yea becareful who u trust at the lfs, some people will say anything to get the sale. u could always do a refugium??

as long as u clean the bio balls out, they're ok. or take them out after 6 mons. i have one, i did take the bio balls out and put live rock in its place. its workin great.

Why not call or e-mail one of the many online sump/filter companies and have them build you a custom sump for your stand? Total flexibility that way and by getting opinions and quotes from several different ones you can make an informed decision.

jobob, The LR in your wet dry, is in completly filled with LR, did you use cured LR and then break it into small pcs so it fills up the wet dry? Also is that good for reef tanks?

i have a wet dry tower that fits into a 10gal, its about 6in over the 10gal. so some of the rock was under water and the others were out of water, but the water would flow over the rock, so it stays alive. but anyway, no i didnt break it up they were left over pieces from when i switch my tank from 29 to 55. i got 40lbs more(sister shut her tank down). the biggest piece was about 5in. so i just fit it in there like a puzzle. then i wanted to add more rock to my main tank so i took it out of thr filter and placed it un the main, then got base rock(dead rock)from lfs to replace the ones i took from wet dry. heres a pic.kinda salty lol

Thats awesome!!! So I think I will go with the wet dry, my tank is not predrilled so I will have to go with an outside overflow box. I think I will get cured LR to put in there and then I can run a skimmer. Any suggestions on A good skimmer to run in the sump?

i have an overflow box. there not that bad. u know u could get a 10gal tank and a filter sock and used that instead of the wet dry. if ur goin to take out the bio balls and use lr. save some money. i run a cheap skimmer, works great only 25 bucks. lol i hear that the red sea berlin skimmer is good. if ur just starting ur tank u could get uncured lr.

I'd definately get rid of the bioballs asap and replace with live rock. Bioballs usually lead to constant algae blooms once the tank is 1-1/2 years to 2 years old.
