I am getting a 75 Gallon Tank and i need some help with the plumbing for the sump and overflow. I am going to get the tank drilled, what size pvc should i use for the overflow?????
What return pump (Of the Mag series) should i use that wont be too powerful??? Ill probably have about 4-5 ft going back to the tank.
Should i use 1" , 1.5" PVC????????
thanks,
Mark

I can see 1.5" drains, but a smaller returns will be better. The larger you go with returns, the more water you have over the return pump. The more water, the more weight. The more weight, or head pressure, the lower the return flow rate. In other words, the larger you make the returns, the larger pump you'll have to buy, to get the same flow rate back to the main tank. I would stick with 3/4" no more than 1", just to keep from having to buy a swomming pool pump, just to get water back up to the tank...JMO ;)

Just to clarify a bit;
The diameter of the return line has very little to do with the actual head pressure.
Head pressure is determined by the vertical height between two points ( the return pump and the spraybar in our case ) times the density ( specific gravity ) of the saltwater.
48 inches distance x 1.024 = 49.15 inches of water pressure.
If you took 3 pieces of PVC pipe each with a bottom cap screwed on - each 4 feet high and filled each with freshwater s.g. 1.00, measured each pressure at the very bottom of the pipecap they would all have the same head - 48" H2O.
Even if one piece was 1" diameter, the other's 2" or 3" or whatever ........
Pumping against these various return lines of different diameters using the same pump WILL affect each one's velocity a great deal.
The smaller diameter piping would have a much greater velocity compared to the other larger diameter pipes.
But the actual volume/time of water delivered back to the tank would be almost identical ( gph or gpm )
This may go against common sense, and may seem odd, but that's the way it is and there's not much we can do to change it.
3/4" or 1" I.D. is normally a standard size return line in this hobby - for most home sized aquarium set ups, although this is not always the case.
I would choose 1" I.D. return line(s) pipe or tubing with 1-1/2" drain(s)

75 gallon is not a huge tank. No need for the 1.5" drains. I think 1" would be fine with 3/4" returns. A Mag 7 running full open or a Mag 9 with a ball valve on the return would be the pump I would get.

My 180 has two 2" drains and two 3/4" returns. The returns are powered by dual 700 GPH pumps. I also have valves on both the drains and the returns so I can regulate water flow just in case.

Anthem,
So if i decide to run 1" drain, with 3/4" return, could i use a Mag 700 or a Mag 950. If i get a 950 should i put a ball valve on it??????
