pod & a fuge

I working on plans for a refugium and have a question...
Should I put the skimmer intake before or after the fuge? I would guess putting it after would mean skimming pods and other small life that I want to pump into the main tank for food. Also, should I remove the filter around the sump pump, or will the food get through it?

You are correct - to not draw a picture I would think you would want it to go in this order:
Tank - to - sump
IN SUMP : Skimmer - then heater then return pump
Attached to the same section as your return pump would be the return from the refugium. so the refugium would flow into the return pump chamber and all of the pods, etc would get sucked up into the main tank.
Go to the DIY section and ask to see some sump and refugium designs. You'll get flooded!

The skimmer location should be upstream of the skimmer. Not because the pods get skimmed out but because a small fraction might get injured in the skimmer pump. It doesn't make a lot of difference so don't go to great effort to fix it if the skimmer is after. Pods do not get skimmed out. They have a remarkable ability to escape getting trapped in bubbles.
Mechanical filters = bad - IMO
