Its not just the algae....have you tested your tap water? i mean everything? RO/DI is what you should really use IMO. My tap water is well. but it reads ammonia, and high magnesium. i believe i dont' want that in my tank...except the Mag. but at a level it is supposed to be at.

well water isn't all that well at all...it can/will cause significant changes in pH as well as contain the nasty stuff that tap/city water contains, except for chlorine and chloramide which cities have to put into the water to kill bacteria...during the summer months most cities use more than the recomended (.02ppm) by the EPA, because algea and bacteria grow better/faster when it is warmer.

Lets see. I filled tank with tap water, Did top offs With RO water. Mixed up tap in the 32 gal garbage can I bought to mix salt water in with drops. Plan on refilling what I used with RO water. Guess I kinda use both

Do yourself and your tank a favor and go with RO, RO/DI or distilled water.

I use "tap" water but I have a water softener that removes most compounds and a carbon filter that removes clorine and other compounds

The thing with tap water is it different across the country, town to town and even sometimes house to house. If you have success with tap water then good for you!! BUT it's ALWAYS better to use purified water... that way there is no question of it's quality. Obviously the water we put into our aquariums is very important to the overall health of the system... and there's more things to worry about then algae.
Look up your city water quality report here
http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dwinfo/index.html
If you can not find your water company's report online then you can go to the water treatment plant and they will give you a copy of their report.

I started with treated tap, switched to RO and now am using treated tap again temporarily because my lfs is closed due to a fire.

RO/DI water for me.
As soon as someone can significantly explain to me how you can export the trace metals/elements that are in tap water I'll switch. Also, don't most houses have copper plumbing?

Generally only the hot water lines are copper pipes. I always use cold tap water to make my sw.
