Pom Pom Crab !! Any one ever seen this before?

Ok so I have a pom pom crab and it didnt come with any.... well pom poms. Actually its an anemone that they carry with them from the genus Bunodeopsis, which is a beaded anemone. But I didnt realize that they would adapt to make due should these anemones not be available to them.
My pom pom stole a green striped mushroom and is using it for a pom pom!!!!???

Im wondering if this could be an issue, if the crab can let it go then fine. But what if the shroom attaches to it. Would it come off in a molt? It looks very cool, i will have to take a pic.

my crab just molted 2 days ago and he took the anemones with him. so urs might take the mushroom off his shell the same way he got it off a rock. now if u could just get it to carry mushrooms that are the color of ur fav sports team it would b a real cheerleader

yeah usually they lay the nems down when they molt then pick them back up. Also if they lose one they will frag the other so that the have two again. I have seen them with zoas before but never with shrooms.

LMAO.... ok ok when I get home tonite I will post some.....Watch with my luck she will molt and drop them. Maybe I could get her to grab some Xenia... now that would be cool!!

Ooooooh! Definately post pics! I can't wait to see them! I originally bought a pom pom crab that didn't have pom poms. My LFS told me that it would probably find something in my tank to use as pom poms. It never did. I added another pom pom crab that had both pom poms and my original one fought with it and stole its pom poms and eventually killed it. This was almost a year ago. He still has the same pom poms and I swear he and his pom poms have doubled in size over the last year! When mine molts, he drops his poms poms and then picks them back up.
Can't wait to see your pics!~

Hey Kat. Probably two of the same gender. You can tell the gender of a crab by looking at it's belly.


When you turn a crab over and look underneath, you can tell a crab's gender by looking at its abdominal flap. A male crab has a small triangular flap, while a female crab has a broad oval-shaped abdominal flap.

OK !!! As promised here they are. My pom pom does not like to come often so I had to bait her out with food. Even then she still hid under a rock ledge. I hope you can see the shroom, its in her right our left claw.

lol! cute! hmm, i wonder what will happen if the shroom eventually gets too big for it to carry around?

I too was going to get one of these crabs, when I got to the store they did not tell me on the phone that the crab had molted and was not carrying any pom poms.
Apparently when they molt and the pom pom (anemones) fall off with the molt they will pick them back up in time or if you have tiny anemones in your tank they will take them.
So since you bought one without its pom poms it will not have any unless you have tiny anemones in your tank. That is why it is carrying around the mushroom.
They use the anemones to keep friends they don't like a way by stining them with the pom poms.
I think they are so neat and would love to have had this one but no pom poms I don't want it.
