Could be a stupid question becasue they carry anenomes, but are they reef safe? I saw that they had anenomes and immediatly deemed that they weren't, but I really want one. I have a 29gal mixed reef. My cuc is about 15 hermits, t turbo snails, 1 cleaner shrimp, and a few benificial hitch hikers. I'm looking to get an emerald, but will gladly replace it with a pom pom if they'll fight.
In my tank I have 2 clowns, and will eventually be getting a Mandarin and a Midas blenny (yes, I have a fuge. Actually I have two). Might possibly add a royal gramma or a green clown goby too if parameters let me. Would a pom pom hurt my fish?
Sorry to hi-jack your thread, Soviettaco.
First off your not Hijacking my thread FretFreak. Don't worry your good
The reason why I say that is its supposed to be everyone's thread. I set this thing up so everyone could post questions, comments, pictures, stories, and what ever you want really if it has to do with poms (cause I'm a newb when it comes to poms I only learned about them in July and I too have questions).
This thread hopefully will atract those out there with poms and those who are pom pros.
So far so good seems like we have a few but we need more!
As for your questions, like I said I am a newb when it comes to poms but I've read enough to answer your questions I believe as of now.
They are Reef Safe but usually are listed as "reef safe with caution" because their anemones have the potential to sting sessile anemones in your tank. BUT the poms' anemones are so small they are unlikely to do much damage if any at all, BUT if you notice something seems to be dying you could technically factor the pom's poms into your ivestigation. Highly unlikely though.
As for fighting with emerald crabs, if your tank has efficient algae growth and detritus and you supplement your crabs'/tank's diet with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, chopped fish and clams (seaweed strips particularly for emerald crabs if algae is low) then you should be fine
. Poms would not go after an emerald they would lose everytime, however the emrald would just devistate the pom if it decided to go after it. Emeralds are an oppurtunistic feeder and if the only food they see is their pom pom crab tankmate then its bye bye pom
! But you can avoid this easily if you monitor your crabs food intake, don't over feed them cause then your going to have parameter problems. Just make sure they have enough. If your good in that area your crabs will be good too.
As for fish, if they mess with a pom pom then they will get smacked by a pom pom, will it hurt them? Yes just like if you or I would get hurt when we touch a hot stove, the fish will say OUCH MY TAIL I WONT MESS WITH THAT THING AGAIN, like we would say when burning our hand. It shouldn't kill them unless they are stupid and let the pom sting it to the point of death (unlikely). The anemones are a evolutionary effect of the Pom Pom crab having very small claws. Small claws = someones dinner, small claws holding some big anemones = you mess with me you get stung. The poms are for defensive measures not attack, so if a fish gets hurt its cause they played with fire and I gaurantee you they won't be doing it again. Unless they are some dumb fish lol.
Hope this helps, but like I said before I am expecting and hoping others (more experienced with poms) will come on here to help answer yours, everybody's, and my questions, as well as beable to provide advise, share their experiences through stories and pics, and to give tips.
So ask away!!! And please come back once you get your pom (if you do), and keep us updated!

ok just for u soviettaco. i'm hoping they're a pair. if any one knows how to tell let me know. when i first got them the larger one only had one pom, by the time i got home and started acclimating they both had two. sharing is caring. they are in a newly renovated 24g aquapod condo.
VALgae as I said to FretFreak before please don't see this as "Soviettaco's Thread" It's the Pom Pom Crab Keeper's Thread not mine. And by the way isn't that awesome?!?!?! If they only have one pom they basically split it and frag it on themselves!!! SO AWESOME!!! Please keep us pom lovers updated with news and pics!!! The ones you put up are really great!
POM POM KEEPERS UNITE!!!
