Record number of pets NOT being adopted and BEING TURNED INTO shelters because of "economic times". I think its outrageous and a copout. I mean How much is a large bag of generic Pet food? $3 or $4 dollars? I would COLLECT CANS or whatever, I would feed miss kitty some of what I WAS eating. I could Never ever give up miss kitty so nonchalantly! She is such a part of my family it would be like giving up one of my children. WIll try to find link!

I couldnt agree more, un-thinkable. Something like that wouldnt even enter my mind, as a possible option.

Even more outrageous are the people who just dump them off in a field, the woods, etc.. While I do not like people dumping their pets on Humane organizations at least they are putting them some place where they will be sheltered and given food and water. I admit many will be euthanised but better that then a domestic pet being turned out to live on it's own and suffer who knows what fate.
Either way..it is not a good situation.

I honestly don't think people think through getting a pet. My sister in law went through many pets, and I watched her give them away for all kinds of rediculous reasons. The puppy jumped up on and scratched her little ones, or, the girls don't want it anymore.
Puppies, ferrets, hamsters, bunnies, you name it.
Irresponsible. But most people only see "cute" when they look at an animal. Not advantage (flea control), heartworm prevention, food, shampoo, TIME, training, hair on the furniture, etc...
Poor poor scott. (LOL)

I don't think it really has to do with affording them.It more or less they are lossing their house and can't find anywhere to rent that would allow animals.I could be wrong but I bet alot has to do with this.It is out of control though.I have to agree.

One thing that really chaps my hide is the number of older animals that are in the shelter because they require medical attention and the person can't afford it. I am talking 12 to 15 year old animals. If that is the case it is your duty to say "well old friend you have lived a good life, and I will be there for you as the doc gives you the final shot." Rather than live out the rest of it's life in a cage before some stranger is there to euthanize it. Ok off my soap box.
You know Tizz, it is funny though. We have Maggie the sweetest dog in the world because someone adopted her when she was a puppy, then returned her two months later because she chewed things up. Hello, it's a puppy! Buy lot's of chew toys.
Then my mom could not handle Sammy and we ended up with him, again an ultra-sweet dog.
Layla the dog with the puppies is ultra-sweet also. It is really a sad story. The lady got pregnant and said that they could not take care of a puppies while she is pregnant, so they brought the dog in on Sat. and she had her pups on Monday.
The Layla story may have a silver lining. One of the puppies has a cleft lip and cannot nurse. So we have to bottle feed every two hours. This is something the previous people would certainly not do. It still only has a 50% chance but it is a better chance that it would have had before.
You know the only dog that we have that is a dud is the one that we picked from the pound ourselves.
But we won't take her back because we know what that would mean to her.

It's getting so bad I saw a clip on the local news tonight where they are lowering the number of days from 7 down to 5 before they euthonize them.

Recently a local news station uncovered a Malteese puppy mill. The county shelters ended up with the dogs and the outpouring to help these dogs was tremendous. Thousands of people called about the dogs. The local shelter got 8 of the dogs. They had to cut off the waiting list at 50 people.
Now the truly sad part is that when people were told the dogs were unavailable they would get in their cars and drive away. Never mind that there were wonderful dogs waiting to be adopted and that obviously these people had a place in their life for a dog. If those 42 people that did not get a puppy mill dog would have taken a dog from the pound it would have emptied them out. Wouldn't that be a great thing, a shelter with empty cages.

I would probably work the street corner to get money before giving up my cats. My cats have had thousands of dollars of medical care from getting sick etc and I would let my car get repo'd before Id let them go.
Some people call thier animals 'pets'. Mine are part of the family. they are fur-people!

i hate when i see people like this. i have a friend who went through like 3 dogs because they insisted on getting a puppy because they are so cute, but would give it to a pound because they chew on the furniture. mind that i was 5 at the time, so i would just directly say "you know theyre going to kill it probably?" and they just said that it was chewing on the furniture, so it had to go. most people dont think of pets as living things, theyre more like moving art.
then again, i know that their are some people who try to offset this problem. my neighbors dog died, and they went to the pound to get a new one. they bring her home, but have to go back to the pound for paperwork or something a week later. they come back with another dog and ask what happened to the other dog. they say they still have her, but saw this new dog too. the people at the pound said she has an incurable heart problem and was going to be euthanized. they couldnt let that happen and decided to take the dog even if it only lives six months. six years later, the dog is still alive and completely healthy.
