Yeah! Should I the same species (astrea)? Or mix it up?

Hmm lots of snail poop pellets everywhere though. I think there is too much for it to eat because of all the dead material still hidden deep inside my dead rock.

Lol never noticed snail poop. if that snail works get the same. I had to add small Sheets to my tank. my snails had babies.

It's like small grey pellets.

Oh my that's so cool!! Free snails hahaha

(Snails cost $15 here, cause all marine stock in our country has to go through a 30 day quarantine in a govt facility, so that increases the price)

Astrea and the Mexican turbo's are the best snails IMO.

And by the looks of it you'll be needing a couple more very soon.

You are in New Zealand aren't you Shilpan? Does the govt QT mean the stock is in better shape when you get it?

Yup I'm in New Zealand

And oh yeah, the local fish stores very rarely have disease on our fish cause it gets weeded out in quarantine. And the new the fish stores here are good they inspect stock every morning and every evening, an drew quarantine their stock if anything appears sick. The worst ive seen is a bit of ick on a person's regal blue tang, but it recovered. If never actually seen any other fish disease yet. Our country is very strict about disease because our environment is isolated so very susceptible to pests.

And yeah can't wait for 2 more snails. It's strange though my green hair algae has stopped growing. Just staying as is. And I probably need to feed my clowns more because they're picking the algae off the rocks.

Did you end up reducing your light cycle at all?

My percula clown is pretty non discriminatory. He'll go after pieces algae sheet as easy as he'll go after meat.

Ahhh I knew I was forgetting something! It's still at 8. We'll I'm doing my tank cleaning today. If the algae grows back just as strong within a week I'll cut it down.
I'm also gonna harvest my macro today.

Ahh that's awesome! Yeah I didn't think the clowns were eating it, just picking it. But then I noticed their poop has gone green and had pieces of hair algae in it. But yeah I doubt they're eating that much. I feed them alternate days about 4-6 mini pellets (=2 normal pellets).

Cool cool

Nah I was just currious about the lights cause that will stall or stunt the algae growth.

When I'd see the tank getting that kind of color I'd cut back the light or leave it off all together for a couple of days.

My thinking was to get that growth to take over in the refugium vs the display. This method as worked pretty well for me these last two times I set up the tank now that I have a halfway decent refugium area.

The first handful of months it would just be a concoction of chaeto, cyano, hair and diatomes growing in there. Then I'd slowly clean out the nasty stuff till only the chaeto remained. Every once in a while I'll get a little cyano but it always stays in the fuge.

Gotcha! Basically turning the refugium into a large Algae turf scrubber.

And yeah so if I keep the refugium lit more than the tank, I'll be favouring the algae growth down there and hopefully out of my tank.

Ok I'll try that after my clean today. Keep the lights off for a couple days in the main display. You reckon the leather coral would live?

Hmm so when I clean today, do I clean the diatoms off my refugium? It has literally grown in a film there all around the macro.

The leather would probably be OK for a while as long as it get some light here and there. Won't be thriving but can keep it alive.

I personal wouldn't clean the refugium. I figure that stuff is growing for a reason. I say let it consume all the excess silicate it wants till it's gone

A refugium is a more preferential place for that to happen vs the display.

The nuisance stuff generally comes on in 3 phases. Diatomes, Algae and cyano bacteria. And in my experience it's a lot easier to remove from the fuge once those growth fazes level off.

Yeah not too fussed about it thriving, alive would be cool but also not necessary since I'm not gonna be adding corals anyway. It gets some
Ambient light anyway.

Gotcha! Appreciate all your help as always Quill. My astrea and clowns would thank you, but they're far too busy tasting everything in my tank. The clown just cleaned off the back of the snail hahahaha...

Just a side note on your leather coral. Forgive me it you already know this. Leathers will retract their polyps and get a waxy coating over the entire coral. This may seem to the new hobbyist like their coral is dying. This is a normal sequence of events. Once they “shed” and open up again they will look better then ever.

Thanks Joe! Good to know :) I read that somewhere when I was researching it but didn't really understand it. What you've said makes sense now, cheers!
