Sure it is!! It is certainly not meant to be eaten with a knife and fork like Chicago pizza is. Dont get me wrong, deep dish is tasty stuff, but it certainly isnt real pizza!

NY pizza...you pick it up and it flops like its lifeless.....when did pizza become a sandwhich...
and you can eat deep dish without a knife and fork......check out this concept ...the crust is actually strong enough to support the toppings.(it doesn't flop like a fish outta water)...the only thing is you get that nice , long, string piece of mozz. cheese dripping down the side of it......

I've developed the impression of NY style pizza as post kegger, dorm food.
Deep dish is more of a meal.
Don't get me wrong, there are some great thin crust pizzas and some really bad deep dish pizzas.
For great Chicago deep dish I would limit the list to:
Geno's East
Lou Malnati's
Uno's (the original one on Ontario, not the chain of grills that have been popping up)
and maybe Giordano's on a good night

I'm in Chicago this week on business. Had Portillo's for lunch yesterday and probably tomorrow. The Maxwell St Polish and the combo with onions and peppers are my favs.
For chili dogs you gotta get the Varsity in Atlanta.

Portillos is honestly one of the things that most makes me regret moving from Chicago (now that I can get the Bears games on directv). The combo beef and sausage is amazing, but their burgers are also great and you can't beat them for a basic hot dog. Also, I wish every place with a drive through could run it like them...gorgeous efficiency! It's so fast people find it hard to believe that everything is made to order.

I had Giordano's in October when I was in last, it was pretty good. I havent had Gino's East in years. For deep dish I also like that place on Archer and Oak Park, Obbies is it? Shame on me for forgetting. If you guys like gyros, go to Nicky's on Archer and Austin, good stuff. I grew up on the swside right by Midway.

no way does ny have better pizza than Chicago. Amatos, Nancy's for you old schoolers Johns ( no, not papa johns ), Mama lunas, on a good day congress. As a matter of fact I'll order one right now. I've been to NY plenty of times and have yet to find pizza that comes close to the aforementioned.
