Keep in mind that a battery back-up doesn't last forever. If you were out of power for a few days would the backup battery last that long? Does anyone know?
I'm wondering as I live in the country and in Iowa and losing electricity is an issue here.
A backup generator is on my list to buy to keep appliances going. I use propane and a munchkin boiler in my home. I believe it comes with its own battery backup so I'll at least have heat ...but I don't want to have cold weather kill my tanks.
Anyone know how long the batteries last on 55 gallon plus aquariums?

I have one that I've had for a few years...its ment to run a computer for up to 15 min and it ran my wet/dry for a while...I was letting it run about 20 min at a time and then turning it off...just to keep water moving but it depends on how big of a battery it had...

I'll be buying another back-up battery or two for the winter. It is about time to make a Staples order anyway.
Thanks for the information.

you could do as much as 75% water change. I had a bad cyano outbreak and changed 75% of my water and everything was alright after the first few hours

First off, so sorry to hear that some of few are still without power/ lost stock from power outage.
I have heard good things about dosing Prime or Amquel in emergencies to keep the levels less toxic to the fish. These will not actually lower your levels though- just detoxify them to a certain extent.
I have a very small portable generator that runs under $100.00 and a battery operated air stone ($17.00). I have the generator on hand to run the filter on and off as necessary and plenty of batteries for the air stone. I have read much on this situation and people have suggested keeping some pre-mixed saltwater on hand for an upcoming storm (or for always as a lot of us do anyway). Having extra water for changes and hand stirring the tank frequently will help keep some oxygen level in the water and slightly lower ammonia etc... as for the temperature than can be tricky to control long term. A generator is the solution that I know of, though a slow decrease to a still acceptable level generally will not kill fish from what I have read. Corals I believe are much more prone to death from a temp drop or raise. Luckily I have never needed to use the back up so I can not offer any info as to how long it would run a filter for.

Well I finally got my power back yesterday afternoon around 5pm....the tank isn't as bad as I had thought...between keeping the UPS charded up atleast once a day and the battery airpump...I only lost my pymgy angel, cleaner shrimp, pepermint shrimp, green serpant star and I am hoping my BTA pulls thru....but we'll see...I just got it back in my tank today...fingers crossed. all my levels were pretty high...ammonia actually came back down on its own after the w/d was running for 24 hrs. I still did a 10G watercahnge today and added a whole bottle of the frytzme bacteria. I am gonna do 10 more tomorrow and sunday aswell to get the nitrates down b/c they were around 60. all fish seem to be doing fine...Yellow tang is kinda thin since I was feeding them VERY lightly for the week I had no power...otehr then that so far so good...working on getting back to normal...and my heart goes out to all the people in New Orleans and Mississippi...
